been produced through the courtesy of the Jacksonvi I le
Genealogical Society. The Historical Services Division of the
Florida Depar tmen t of Military Affairs provided the photostatic
copies of the original muster roles and individual members of the
Jacksonville Genealogical Society laboriously transcribed the
information contained therein and later, proofed and typed them.
They have been accorded the right to produce these I ists in book
form for commercial sale.

MUSTER ROLLS OF THE FLORIDA INDIAN WARS, VOL. 5

The following Muster Roll of Capt. John H. HECK'S Company was copied from
Vol. 5, of the Florida Indian Wars and is the first of a series of Company
Muster Rolls contained in this volume. The muster rolls of the men who served
from Florida during the Indian Wars are housed and maintained at the Arsenal in
St. Augustine, Florida, headquarters of the Florida National Guard. The
heading reads:

"Muster Roll of Capt. John H. HECK's Company of the First Regiment
Brigade of the Florida Mounted Militia commanded by Colo. W. J. BAILEY
ordered into service of the United States by the Secretary of War from the
Eighteenth day of January 1841 to the Eighteenth day of April 1841. "

A number of headings followed, i.e., (1) Number, (2) Name, (3) Rank/Rate,
(4) Date Arrived, (5) Date Mustered, (6) Mustered by, (7) Period of Service,
(8) Miles to Place of Rendezvous, and lastly a Remarks column.

This company arrived and was mustered in on the same day, 18 January 1841.
The enlistment in each case was for three months. All men were mustered in by
Major S. CHURCHILL.

day of July, 185 7 to serve for the term of s ix month s frcm date of enroll-
ment (unless sooner discharged) frcm t he 27th day of July 1857 to the 27th day
of January 1958. Company organized by C apt. S wesson WHITEHEA D at N ewnans-

Most of the men were enrolled and mustered at Ocala on 27th July; a few re-
ported in August; however, according to the roll, all were enrolled by Capt.
WHITEHEAD and mustered by Lieut. S. D. LEE. The names on the roll are:
