While this tale is no literary great, it's not to be missed for anyone interested in a thumping good sea story. I found it delightful that the author, in his preface, apologizes for his inclusion of "sentiment," meaning a love story. He advises the reader to skip over these parts if not interested. Be forewarned, this book is not politically correct. The author uses casual racial epithets and stereotypes common at the time. On the other hand, notice the democratic nature of the sailing fraternity; a man may be referred to as a "Dago," or worse, but he's treated as an equal if he pulls his weight. Read the story as pure entertainment, or as insight into the sailor's world of a hundred years ago, but be sure to read it.
