PRACTICAL DIETETICS.
With Reference to Diet in Disease.
Ten Lessons.
(For Each School.)
There have been many improvements during the past year
in our equipment for the instruction of nurses.
The lecture hall and class room promised last year by the
Board of Trustees has become a reality, and has made it pos-
sible to arrange the class work and lectures far more sys-
tematically and satisfactorily.
Valuable anatomical charts and apparatus have been pur-
chased, and many books of reference added to the libraries of
both Schools.
A Diet Kitchen for the preparation of special food for the
Hospital, and for the instruction of nurses, has been recently
opened.
Our course in dietetics now includes not only theoretical
instruction by a graduate in domestic sciences, but practical
work in the preparation of food for the sick under competent
supervision.
A tent for the treatment of tuberculosis in connection with
the Out Patient Department has been in constant use during
the year.
Three graduates and one pupil nurse have been employed
visiting in the homes of the tuberculosis patients, supervising
72
their food and care, as well as instructing them and tlie family
in regard to preventing the spread of the disease. This, in
connection with the clinical work of the Dispensary gives
most valuable experience to our pupils.
In addition to our regular course of lectures, we have had
two on Sociology, one by the Hon. Homer Folks, the other
by Mrs. F. Kelley.
We have admitted to the Training Schools 72 women pro-
bationers and JT, nien. We have graduated during the year
1904, 16 women and 27 men.
Our graduating class in the Training School for women
nurses was small, due to the fact that the course has recently
been increased to three years.
Forty- four calls have been received during 1904 for nurses
to fill hospital positions.
Opera, theatreand concert tickets have been received from
various friends during the year, and much ajipreciated by the
nurses.
Our Schools have received visits of inspection from Rep-
resentatives of the New York State Board of Education, and
were among the first to be registered by the State.
The work of our nurses has extended greatly during the
year, and we have often been taxed to our utmost to supply
the needs of the Hospital.
The question of providing additional quarters is impera-
tive, and we trust that another year will find us able to add
to the number of pupils in training.
Respectfully submitted.
Jaxe a. Delano,
Superintendent of Training Schools.
