TOWNSHEND OF CASTLE TOWNSHEND.

Stephen s-TowNSHEND, Maueice Fitzgeraeb,
Esq. of Castle Townsheud, co. Cork, b. 4 Nov.
1SG5.

Lineage. — This family claims descent from the ancient
Norfolk House of Townshend. The first who settled in
Ireland was a Col. Richabd Townsend, Townesende, or
Townshend, an oEBcer in the army of the Parliament during
the wars previous to the Commonwealth. In 1646, he was
present at the surrender of Pendennis Castle, Cornwall, and
(his regiment having been ordered to Ireland in June, 1647,
by the House of Commons) he commanded the main body of
the army, under Lord Inchiquin, at the battle of Knockoness,
near Mallow, co. Cork, Cols. Grey and Blunt heading the left
and right wings respectively during the temporary revolt from
the Parliament at Mallow, 3 April, 1848. Inchiquin and his
principal ofBcers there received Lord Ormond as Lord Lieu-
tenant for Ireland in Sept. 1648. After the King's execution in
the following year, the garrison of Cork, declaring the
question no longer to be between the King and Parliament,
revolted back to the Lord Protector, and Col. Townsend sub-
sequently presented the keys of the city of Cork into Oliver
Ckomwell's hands at Dungarvan. Col. Townsend made
several large purchases of land from time to time, for which
he got three several patents, viz., in 1606, 166S, and 1679; the
first being for Castle Townsend (now the seat of the head of
the family), which he had purchased some time before. He
was elected M.P. for Baltimore 10 April, 1661, and was ap-
pointed to command a troop of (Carbery) Militia in 1666 by the
