Charles, who settled in early life in the Island of St.
Christopher, or St. Kitt's, in the West Indies, and later
removed to Charleston, South Carolina. He m. Ruth,
dau. of Henry liawlins, and d. March, 1736, leaving three
sons,

1 WiUiam, whose grandson, John, was Surveyor-General
of Dominica, and rl. 1812.

2 Charles, a Planter in Colleton county, and Provost
Marshal for South Carolina in 1752, m. Jeannie Perry,
and d. 1763, leaving a son, Charles.

3 Rawlins, Provost Marsha! for South Carolina 1742,
was cahed to the Colonial Bar. He opposed the British
Government throughout the War of Independence, and
was appointed President of South Carolina 10 March,
1778. He was three times married : 1st, 1.5 Aug. 1748,
Amarinthia, dau. of Thomas Elliott, of Rantoules,
d. .t. p. 14 Jan. 1750 : 2ndly, 23 Dec. 1751, Mary Cart>
Wright, of Charleston, by whom he had, with four
daus., two sons to survive, Thomas and James ; and
Snily, Sarah Jones, of Georgia, by whom he liad a son,
William. He d. at Charlestown 24 Aug. IbOO, and
from him descends the present family of Lowndes of
South Carolina.



Edward Gorst, Esq. of Preston, who, by Elizabeth his
wife, dau. of James Wigglesworth, Esq., had issue,

High Sheriff co. Wilts 1874. This gentleman,
son of the late Edward Chaddock Lowndes, Esq.
(previously Gorst), assumed the surname and arms
of Lowndes by royal licence, 18 July, 1853, in com-
pliance with the testamentary inj unction of his
father's great-uncle, Robert Lowndes, Esq. of Pal-
terton.

Lineage.— Mr. Lowndes is a descendant of the ancient
family of Lowndes, formerly of Leigh Hall and Overton, Che-
shire (ifc Lowndes of Barrinriton). His father, Edward Chad-
dock Lowndes, Esq. (formerly Edward Chaddock Gorst), m.
1830, Elizabeth, dau. of John Douthwaite Nesham, Esq. of
Houghton-le-Spring, Durham, and by her (who d. 4 Dec. 1848)
had issue,

Edward Chaddock, now of Palterton Hall and Castle
Combe.

Iiineagre. — This is a younger branch of the very ancient
family of Lowther, raised to the Peerage in 1696, under the
title of Lonsdale.

William Lowtheb, Clerk of the Warrants of the Common
Pleas of Ireland, 5th son of Sm Cukistopher Lowther, of
Lowther, co. Westmorland, and brother of Sir John, great-
grandfather of the 1st Lord Lonsd;ile, lu. Eleanor, dau. oi
Anthony Welbury, of Castle Eden, and was father of

Sir Richard Lowther, who m. Isabel, 2nd dau. of Sir Richard
Fletcher, of Hutton, and was father of

George Lowther, of Skrine Abbey, co. Aleath, who iiu
Frances, dau. of Henry Piers, Esq. of Tristernagh, and was
father of

Edward Lowther, Esq. of Kilrue, co. Meath, who m. Mary,
dau. of Patrick Cusac, Esq. of Gcrardstown, and was father of

George Lowther, Esq. of Kilrue, M.P. ; vi. 1741, Jane, dau.
of Sir Tristram Beresford, and sister of the 1st Earl of Tyrone
(.Set' Burke's Peerage, Waterford), and had, with two dauo., of
whom the youngest, Sophia, m. Rowley Hill, Esq., M.P., two
sons.

Makcl's, M.P., who m. 1743, Catherine, dau. and heir of
Sir Edward Crofton, Bart., of Jloat Castle, co. Roscommon,
assumed the name and arms of Crofton, and was created i\

Gorges Lowther, Esq. of Kilrue, for fifty years M.P. for
Meath, b. 25 Nov. 1713 ; m. 1738, Judith Usher, sister of St.
George, Lord St. George (whose only dau., Emilia Olivia, w.
William Robert, 2nd Duke of Leinster, K.P„ and d. 1792),
and left, with a dau. (Sophia, who in. Col. William Irvine, of
Castle Irvine, co. Fermanagh), a son and successor,

George Lowther, Esq. of Kilrue and of Lowther Lodge',
CO. Dublin, m. 17G7, Frances, dau. of Chambre Brabazon Pou-
sonby, Esq. of Ash Grove, and grand-niece of Brabazon, 1st
Earl of Bessborough, by whom (who d. 19 Nov. 1802) he had
issue.

Chambrd Brabazon Ponsonby, Kector of Orcheston, Wilts,

Henry Murray Loxdale, Esq. She d. s. p. 1892.

Lineage. — This family traces its descent from

Robert Loxdale, who lived at Mere Town, parish of Forton,
CO. Stafford, on his own estate by inheritance, in the time of
Henby VII. He M. Joan Undyrwood, by whom he had one
son, .

Michael Loxdale, of Mere Town, who m. 1559, Alice Gret-
backe, and d. April, 1594, leaving two sons and three daus.

Robert Loxdale, of Mere Town, bapt. 27 Dec. 1564, had by
