Xiineag'e. — in early times the Martins resided at Leices-
ter, and frequently held the highest offices in that ancient and
important borough. In the years 1333, 1338, and 1364, John
Martyn was Mayor of Leicester, and was also {temp.
Edward III.) twice returned M.P. for the borough. Shortly
afterwards, the family held possessions at Anstey, anciently
called Hanstigie, or Anstige, co. Leicester, which they have
ever since possessed, and where they have resided to the
present time.

William Martin, Esq. of Anstey Pastures, J. P., b. 1777 (2nd
son of Robert Martin, Esq. of Anstey, by Ann Hallam his wife,
and 7th in descent from Robert Martyn, who purchased Anstey
Pastures); m. 12 May, 1807, Ann Wood, only child and heir
of John Richards, Esq. (the last of the family of that name
seated at Normanton-on-Soar, co. Nottingham), and by her
(who d. 16 April, 1855) had issue,

MARTIN OF ROSS.

Maetin, Eobeet Jaspee, Esq. of Eoss, co. Gal-

Baddeley Eoche, Esq. of Killuntin, co. Cork, and
dau. of J. J. Schmidt, Esq. of Thornfield, co.

Xiineage. — This family is descended from one of the
officers who accompanied De Burgh, the ancestor of the noble
family of Clanricarde, to Ireland, temj). Henry II., and, upon
the conquest of Galway, settled there. In the Book of Pedigrees,
vol. X. (Office of Arms, Dublin Castle), the arms are stated to
have been granted to Oliver Martin by King Richard 1. in
the Holy Land. About the year 1590, Robert Martin, the
lineal ancestor of the present Mr. Martin, was in possession of
the estates now held by that gentleman. Robert Martin thus
referred to served the office of High Sheriff, 1607
