Elisha Dungan and wife emigrated to Indiana from Virginia about
1827, and settled on Hurricane Creek, Johnson Co., where they lived
and died. They endured the various trials and hardships of those
days with fortitude, and lived a christian life, doing well their duty
in that state of life in which it hath pleased God to call them. They
had twelve children, three died in infancy, the remaining nine grow-
ing to manhood and womanhood, and proved successful men and wom-
en in their various communities. Elisha Dungan was a popular man
in Johnson Co., and had a reputation for honesty and justness of
dealings, which is the best heritage a man can leave to his family. In
politics he was an old line Vfhig, and afterwards a strong Republican.
He died April 16, 1863. She d. Oct., 1863.

Stephen W. Dungan lived on the farm with his parents until he was
sixteen years of age, acquiring a common school education. He taught
school winters and worked on the farm summers until 1860, when
he went to Chicago and studied music under the supervision of Brad-
bury, Root and Mason. He then returned to Indiana and became a
successful teacher in music until Aug. 1862, when he enlisted in the
army in the Seventeenth Ind. Infantry, Co. I, as second lieutenant.
He was under Gen. Rosecrans in Tenn. and Ky. Sickness caused him
to resign and he returned home in 1863. After his father's death he
became possessor of the home place of 160 acres, but rented and
taught music until 1866. He has been largely identified in raising^
cattle, horses and sheep. His farm now contains 350 acres of highly
cultivated lands.
