Myron W. Tilson^, (Elisha W."^, Joseph^, John^, Stephen^, Ed-
munds, Ephraim^, Edmonds ) b. Jan. 17, 1839, son of Elisha W.
and Almira K. (Turner) Tilson. When about fifteen years of age
he began a seafaring life. He was in the brig August of Kingston,
Mass., July 1st, 1856, when she was lost on tlie coast of Labrador.
Returning home, he went to the West Indies and other ports. For
some time he located in the eastern part of Xew Brunswick. Soon
after the Civil War began he preparecl himself for the navy, and was
appointed acting ensign in 1862 and ordered to the schr. T. A. Ward
of the Potomac Flotilla. The Ward was ordered to Admiral Dabl-
green's fleet, off Charleston, S. C, and arrived on 3d Oct., 1863.
On the 20th Act. Ensign Tilson and nine men were captured on
Magnolia Beach by the 21st Georgia Cav. and marclied to George-
town, S. C, then to Charleston and to Eichland Co. Jail, Columbia,
where he was held a prisoner until Oct. 16, 1864. In a few weeks
he was ordered to the gunboat Lenapee and took part in the capture
of Ft. Fisher, where Lieuts. Preston and Porter were killed, who
were fellow prisoners with Actg. Ensign Tilson at Columbia. S. C.
He was honorably dis. from the U. S. Navy, Dec. 10, 1865, and soon
entered the merchant service as captain of the brig Ballot Box,
steamship Alliance and other vessels. His exposure as prisoner of
war brought on heart trouble, which compelled him to retire from
sea service. He then engaged in the ice business at Houston. Texas,
but failing in health, had to give up business and go to Galveston,
where he died Sept. 22, 1870. Unm. He is ])uried in the Masonic
Cem. at Galveston, on the north side next to the brick wall. The

following is an extract from his letter about six weeks before his
death :

Houston, Texas, Aug. 4, 1870.
I have been examined by four of the best doctors in Texas and all
pronounce me troubled with heart disease, and I was satisfied that
w^as the trouble before I was examined. That is the cause of the
several falls I have had the past twelve months. The first in Boston,
second in Galveston and third in Houston. I am satisfied I con-
tracted the affection of the heart while a prisoner of war. On a
march from Georgetown to Charleston, S. C, a distance of ninety
miles, without food or sleep, and water not fit to drink. I was sick
about four weeks after we arrived in Charleston. It was very hot
and oppressive at the time, and my breath began to fail from that
time and never before, but I am not going to kill myself by worrying.

Capture of a boat's crew of the T. A. Ward. Report of Eear Ad-
miral Dalgreen.

Flag Steamer Philadelphia, off Morris Island, Nov. 6, 1863.

Sir: The schooner T. A. Ward arrived here on the 3d instant
from Morrell's Inlet, where she was stationed, with the intelligence
that on the 17th iiltimo a schooner was discovered lying about half
a mile up the inlet. Acting Ensign Tilson of the Ward, with two
boats, immediately proceeded to board her, which he succeeded in
doing without any resistance, there being but one man on board.
She proved to be the schooner Eover, a vessel of about fifty tons,
and formerly a Charleston pilot boat.

Upon examination she proved to be loaded with a full cargo of
cotton. Joseph Stewart, the person captured on board of her, states
that she had been lying there for several weeks, waiting a crew to
run the blockade to some English port. Finding the schooner hard
and fast aground and impossible to get her off, Mr. Tilson set fire
and destroyed her. 'No papers or documents of any kind were found
on board.

On the 20th of October a party of nineteen men under Acting
Ensign Tilson was dispatched for a short distance from the Ward in
quest of water. Leaving the boats in charge of Acting Master's Mate
Elwell with seven men. Acting Ensign Tilson with ten men landed.
They had proceeded about half a mile from the boats when they were
surprised and attacked by a large body of Eebel Cavalry, who made
them prisoners. The boats were also attacked, but were successfully
clef ended by Acting Master's Mate Elwell and the seven men who
remained. The commander of the Ward speaks highly of their con-
duct. I have the honor to be very respectfully your obedient servant,

Jno. a. Dalhgreen, Rear Admiral, commanding.
Hon. Gideon- Wells, Secretary of the Navy, Washington, D. C.

Eeport of Acting Ensign Myron W. Tilson.

South Hanson, Massachusetts, Xov. 5, 1864.
Sir : I have the honor to report that on the 20tli of October, 1863,
I left the United States Scliooner T. A. Ward, then lying off Morrell's
Inlet, South Carolina, in command of a howitzer boAt with a crew
of eleven men, under orders from Acting Master William L. Babcock,
commanding the T. A. Ward, to go in and lie off the beach, within
easy range, and shell the enemy's cavalry if they attempted to re-
treat down the beach while the schooner shelled the building to the
northward, occupied by them as quarters. On being joined by an-
other boat with six men, in charge of Acting Master's Mate A. El-
well, and on a given signal from the ship, I landed in further obedi-
ence to my orders, to ascertain if a schooner then lying up the inlet
about one and a half miles from its mouth (and which I afterwards
found to be the schooner Cecilia of Xassau, X. P.). could be cut
out or destroyed. Also to examine the locality with a view to ob-
taining water. Leaving the boats in charge of Acting Master's Mate
A. Elwell, I proceeded up the beach with ten men. On approaching
the schooner we were surprised by a considerable detachment of the
enemy, consisting of Companies A and C, 21st Georgia Cavalry, and
after a brief and ineffective resistance were compelled to surrender
to a greatly superior force. After the skirmish I found James Lacy
(ordinary seaman) missing. Have reason to believe he was killed in
the skirmish on the beach. An unsuccessful attempt was also made
by the enemy to capture the boats. I have no knowledge of any dam-
age sustained by them. After our capture we were forwarded viz.
Georgetown, S. C, and Charleston to Eichland Jail, Columbia, S. C.
I am very respectfully your obedient servant,

Myrof W. Tilson, Acting Ensign, U. S. Navy.

Hon. Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy.

Sir: Many of our seamen and marines have died since their re-
moval from Richmond to Andersonville, Georgia. I have been in-
formed by reliable persons of that prison that the cause of such
mortality was starvation and its effects.

The following is a list of men captured with me and died during
their severe imprisonment at Andersonville, Georgia:

William TJaymond (cockswain), died July 27, 1864.

James Doulphince (seaman), died August 21, 1864.

Augustus Kultz (ordinary seaman), died March 29, 1864.

John Regan (ordinary seaman), died June 18, 1864.

Michael Tearney (landsman), died June 30, 1864.

Thomas J. Reynolds (ordinary seaman), missing: when last heard
from was held a hostage at Salisbury. North Carolina.
Very respectfully your obedient servant,

Myrox W. Tilson, Acting Ensign, U. S. Navy.
