was an intimate friend of Lyman Beecher, and is often mentioned
familiarly in the life of the latter. During Beecher's first college
vacation, he kept school for "Ben,"' who was on a journey. This
keeping him three weeks of the term, he was called up before
President Stiles, who, after hearing the story, said simply, '•'JSote-
tur" (3'ou must be fined.) In the latter part of his college course,
Baldwin, tlien engaged to Betsey Chittenden, took him over to
'Nut Plain, on which occasion he fell in love with his future wife,
Roxana Ward. lie noticed, however, that Betsey was a l)lack-
eyed, black-haired girl, full of life as could be.

to be a descendant of the seventh or eio-hth generation from Hen-
drick Hudson, "'as records in the possession of the family clearly
show."'

391. NORMAX C.« Stephen 5 Stephen,-* b. in Litchfield, Conn.,
July 29, 1802. His father d. when be was eight years old, and
two vears after, he went to work in a cousin's store. When not
much over fourteen, his mother emigrated to "I^ew Connecticut,"
and he stopped at Hudson, Summit county, Obio, and commenced
trading on his own account. At twenty-eight, be was the Bald-
win of Giddings, Baldwin ct Co., of Cleveland, a lirm containing
seven partners in commercial business. The business was largely
by canal boats, passenger and others, the line carrying passengers.
In 1836, he left the mercantile business, and has since devoted his
attention largely to real estate. In the " Representative Men of
Cleveland,"' is an anecdote illustrating the condition of the roads
in early times. While living at Hudson, he drove his team to
Cleveland in one day (twenty-four miles) the first time the feat was
ever performed, causing some excitement on his arrival. He still
retains his energy, activity and love of a good horse. A warm-
hearted, genial gentleman, one of those with perhaps as wide and

popular a personal acquaintance as any in the city. He lias seen
many ups and downs in the city, reaching old age with an ample
fortune. He was President of the Canal Bank, a leading hank,
until the crash of 1837. Mr. Baldwin is full ot pleasant remin-
iscences of the past and very intelligent on the business history
of Cleveland. He m., Dec. 17, 1829, Mary H. Talmer, dau. of
Robert, of Goshen, Conn.; she d. April 14, 1867.

399. THERONe Elisha^ Stephen,* b. in Goshen, Conn., July
21, 1801; he graduated at Yale College in 1827; pursued his
divinity studies in Xew Haven, and became a preacher. He left
home for Illinois, in the service of the Home Missionary Society,
in September, 1829, and continued until 1837. From 1837 to 1843,
he was Principal of the Monticello Female Seminary of Illinois,
and Pastor of the Church. In 1843, he became Corresponding
Secretary of the "Societ}' for the Promotion of Collegiate and
Theological Education at the West." His headquarters were in
the Bible House in New York City, and he lived in Orange, IST. J.,
where he d. April 10, 1870. He m. Caroline Wilder, of Burling-
ton, Vt., June 20, 1831. He received the degree of Doctor of
Divinity.

graduated at Williams College, settled at Winchester, and d.
there, June 11, 1850; she, May 7, 1852. His portrait, and a sketch
of himself and his descendants, is in the "Annals of Winchester,
Conn.," by John Boyd; Hartford, 1873. His friend, the late Lewis
M. Norton, Esq., of Goshen, says: "It will be for a coming gene-
ration to speak of the ability, fidelity, the affectionate labors, and
the success of this servant of Jesus Christ."

Conn.; said to have m. Abijah Coe, who must be the Abijah Coe
sou Robert and Chloe (Thrall) Coe, said, in Olcutt's "History of
Torrington," to have m. Sibyl, dau. Israel Baldwin, of Goshen,
Oct. 18, 1792, and settled in Goshen, East street, a blacksmith,
where he remained until 1810. Unless my entries from Probate
Records are wrong, he must have m., hefore 1804, Sibbel, dau.
Asahel. In 1810, he came to Tf)rrington, near West Pond. His
