Yale in 1812. He was a distinguished Presbyterian preacher;
pastor in ISew York City seventeen years. He received the degree
of Doctor of Divinity, and at his death was President of Wabash
College, Indiana. His life is published as follows :

"Memoir of Elihu W. Baldwin, D.D. ; 1st Pastor of 7th Presbyterian Church,
and 1st President of Wabash College. By Edwin F. Hatfield. New York: Jonathan
Leavitt. 1843. pp. 403."

Elias A.^ Aaron * Benjamin^ Benjamin - Joseph;^ she d. in Indian-
apolis, Ind., Dec. 12, 1850. Young Baldwin, while in College,
entered the family of Rev. Azel Backus, D.D., of Bethlehem,
Conn., as assistant teacher. He returned to College in 1810, He
continued to partly support himself by teaching, and graduated
in 1812. He studied theologv at Andover. In 1817, he settled in
Kew York City as a Missionary " among the poor and destitute,'*'
and was very successful. In December, 1818, he was chosen Cor-
responding Secretary of the Missionary Society. He organized
the Seventh Presbyterian Church in New York, of which he
became Pastor. In 1835, he became the first President of Wabash

College, Crawfordsville, Ind. He d. there, Oct. 15, 1840. He was
an earnest and successful man. Dr. Hatfield says he was "a fine
illustration of the power of sound common sense, practical dis-
cretion and genuine piety to elevate a man to usefulness and
renown among his contemporaries." He, during all his life, had
held of new enterprises, and carried them with hard labor (which
he did not grudge) to success. He was the author of several
very successful Sunday School books and tracts.
