John 3 Benjamin- Henry ,1 b. in Salina, N. Y., Dec. 24, 1817. In
1837, he settled, in Oakhind county, Mich., teaching school and
studvins: law. He has remained in that county, and resides, 1880,
at Pontiac. In 1842, he commenced practice. From 1844 to
1846, he was a Member of the Legislature, and in 1853 and 1854,
Prosecuting Attorney. He has been a Democratic delegate to
the National Conventions of 1860, 1864 and 1868. He was a
Member of the Thirty-eighth Congress in 1862, and the candidate
of his party in 1864 and 1872. In 1875, he was elected Judge of
the Sixth Judicial District of Michigan, which position he fills
in 1878. As a speaker, he is forcible and convincing. Few men
are better versed in histoiy, or more ready with facts. At the
beginning of the late war, he thoroughly supported the Union
and the Government. In 1865, he was one of the few Democrats
who supported the amendment to the- Constitution abolishing
slavery. Although busy at the bar, and now on the bench, he
has found time to cultivate literature and j^sthetics. I am told
by a gentleman at the State capital, that Mr. Baldwin has a
library of seven thousand volumes, and one of the finest collec-
tions of paintings in Michigan. His home is a charming one.
He has always taken a lively interest in schools, and is the present
President of the Board of Education. He is also President of the
Pioneer Society, and of the Agricultural Society of his county.
He is, say those who know, a gentleman of genial humor, rare
tenderness, and now in full vigor, with much promise of further
usefulness. He m., Oct. 20, 1842, Miss Isabella Churchill, of
Bloomfield, Oakland county, still living.

' John Baldwin, of B^llerica, Massachusetts^

AND HIS DESCENDANTS.

1. JOITX BALDWIX appears in Billerica, Mass., as early as
L655, He bad a grant of laud there in 1657, says Farmer. He
was probably one of the petitioners for land in Chelmsford in
1653, and perhaps was then with Henry, in Woburn. Many of
the petitioners were from Wobnrn. I have not been able to
identifv this amons; the many Johns. That he was probablv of
the Baldwins long resident in the adjoining edges of Buckingham-
shire and Hertfordshire, in England, appears from the tradition
of a very iutellii^ent o-reat grandson, that he came from Herts.
He seems to have been intimate with Henry, of AVoburu. He
married there a cousin of the wife of Henry; was, as we haye
suggested, likely there in 1653, when petitioner for Chelmsford,
but settled in Billerica, being between the towns of Chelmsford
and Woburn. When he drew his will, Henry witnessed it. It is
quite likely he was brother to Henry, but I know no proof. He
was probably too old to be John, born June 21, 1635, son of John,
of Dedham. It has been suggested that he may haye been John,
aged 21, and Mary, aged 20, who arriyed at Boston in 1656, in the
^'Speedwell;'' but this ]\Iary could not, of course, haye been his
wife. I do not think he was so likely to haye been of the " Speed-
well "" as the petitioner for Chelmsford in l653. His brother-in-law
Thomas also settled in Billerica. The Baldwins remainino;in Bil-
lerica write : "We always supposed he was the brother of Ilenr}-, of
Wobnrn." By tradition of his o-r. o-randson Beniamin^ Thomas "^
John- John,^ b. in 1743, he came from Hertfordshire about 1640.
Benjamin lived to be quite old, and his narrative was taken down

ill 1828, and a copy is in my possession. As usual witli sucli nai'
ratives, he gives later names for the emigrants (Thonuis, Josepll
and Benjamin). The people of Jiillerica were troubled with Id
dians, and in 1675, were distributed in twelve garrisons ; Johi
was in garrison number six, at James Patterson's, for four families\
He married Mary Kichardson,"- bapt. Nov. 17, 1638, dan. Thomasi
of Woburn, by his wife Mary, and cousin of Phebe, wife of Henry
Baldwin, of Woburn. He was made freeman in 1670, and died
in 1687. His will is dated Xov. 11, 1686, and to be found in
Boston. He is styled husbandman. He calls Mary his " now mar-
