HALL.



FIDELIA HALL (ante page 149). Few families were more respectable in early times
than the Halls of Wallingford. There were frequent ministers, numerous godly dea-
cons, representatives in General Court and in Constitutional Conventions, andione of
their number. Lyman, was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and Governor
of Georgia. The first ancestor here was

•JOHN HALL, in Xcw Haven, in 1639. His autograph is among the
original colonists there. His name appears often, mostly in regard to pieces of
laud. He was freed from training in 1065, being sixty years old. He settled in
Wallingford in 1670. and il. in 1676. He m. Jane Wallen, or Woolen, or Jean
Woolen, as she is variously called. She was the sister of John; in Xew^ Haven, in
1642: imprisoned the next year by the Swedes at Delaware, as he was trading there.
She had lived, before marriage, with Mr. AVilkes, who was in Boston in 1633, w^ho
not^only paid her the sum of £8 per year stipulated by indenture, but his executors
the further sum of £10. and Mrs. Wilkes left her a legacy. She lived with them in
Boston, and came with them to New Haven, and may have been a relative. The
second of his six ch. was

SAMUEL HALL,-2 b. :\Iay 21, 1648; m.. May, 1668, Hannah Walker, of
New Haven, dau. John Walker; there in 1639. She was probably b. Sept. 26,
1646. He was Deacon of the Church iu Wallingford, and d. there in 1725. He
had a' son

SAMUEL, 3 m. Love — — ; and among his ch. was

THEOPHILUS,* (Rev.); b. April 1. 1707; graduated at Yale College in
1727: m.. :May 22, 1734. Hannah Avery. Ordained in Meriden, Oct, 29, 1729. He
d. in IT(j7. He was the first minister in that Parish. Mr. Dana's Century Sermon
says: "He was much esteemed as a preacher; of great firmness and stability, and
a zealous advocate for civil and religious liberty." His wife was of Groton, and no
(k)ubt a descendant of Christopher, of New London, probably gr. dau. ; and dau.
of Samuel, of Groton. The second of his eight children was

THEOPIIILUS,s b. about 1741 or 1743; lived in Wallingford, Parish of
Meriden; m. Elizabeth Couch, dau. John Couch. Her mother was, before mar-
riage, Zuba Andrews, b. April 1, 1731, dau. Elisha aud Mablc (Andrews) Andrews;

she d. March 17, 1834, aged 74. Elisha A.ndrcws was b. April 28, 1701, s. Samuel, 2
s. William, of Hampsworth, Englaud. William built the first meeting house in
New Haven, in 1644. He d. at East Haven, March 4, 1676. Samuel Andrews 2
was b. in England in 1633, and d. Oct. 6, 1704; he. m. Elizabeth, dau. Deacon
William Peck, of New Haven. William Peck was a merchant from London, b. in
1601, and came, in 1637, with his wife Elizabeth. Samuel Andrews,3 m., Aug. 37,
1686, Hannah or Anna Hall. Elisha Andrews,^ b. in 1701; m. Mabel Andrews;
and his dau. Zuba, b. April 1, 1731, m. John Couch. The Couches perhaps came
from Ottery, St. Mary's, County Devon, as in Book 4, page 45, Milford Kecords, is
a power of attorney from Elizabeth Couch, of that place, single woman, to Daniel
Oliver, of Boston, as to land in Milford, of Samuel Couch, her father, deceased.
It is dated July 12, 1704. Theophilus Halls d. May 17, 1804, in his 63d year; he
had seven children, one of whom was

THE0PHILUS,6 b. April 30, 1773; m., March 34, 1804, Bethia Merriam, b.
July 4, 1784; she was dau. Ephraim and Beulah (Galpin) Merriam. Beulahwas dau.
Samuel and Abigail (Ward) Galpin, of "Newfields." Ephraim Merriam was s. Ben-
jamin and Mary (?) (Berry) Merriam. Mrs. Hall said the Merriams were from Lynn,
Mass. , which is no doubt correct, as there was quite a family of them there, among
whom was Benjamin, b. April 23, 1678. Theophilus 6 was a physician in Meriden,
of reputation and skill, whose life was cut short at the age of forty-two, on the 36th
of September. 1815. They had ch. :

1. Harry William, 7 b. July 21, 1804; d. Sept. 20, 1807.

2. Eliza,'' b. June 17, 1806; m. Beri Andrews, and settled in Penfield, Lorain
county, Ohio.

3. Nancy Maria, 7 b. June 33, 1808; m. Deacon John Yale, of Meriden, Conn.

4. Fidelia,^ b. April 30, 1810; m. S. W. Baldwin, (ante page 147.)

5. Sou, 7 b. May 18, 1813, and d. the same day.

6. Hiram Aiigustus,'' b. Sept. 1, 1813, and d. May 33, 1814.

7. Henry Theophilus,7 b. April 19, 1816, and d. April 31, 1816.

Widow Bethia Hall m. Ezekiel Rice, widower of Meriden, by Avhom she had a
large family. She lived to a happj', serene and beautiful old age.

CAPT. THOMAS PRENTICE i was freeman in 1653, in Cambridge, Mass. ;
he died at his residence in Newton, -July 6, 1710, aged 89. His wife was named
Grace. He was the famous Capt. Thomas Prentice, of King Phillip's wai-.

THOMAS,2 w^as b. 11, 23, 1649; d. April 19, 1685. He m., Jan. 30, 1675,
Sarah Stanton; she was b. about 1655, dau. Thomas and Ann Stanton, who went to
Virginia in 1635, at the age of twenty. He m. Ann Lord, b. in 1621, dau. Thomas
Lord, of Hartford, Conn. Thomas Stanton was famous as an Indian interpreter;

and enough of his adventures could still he gathered to make an entertaining
biography. Thomas Lord came from London in the Elizabeth and Ann, in 1635.
aged tifty, with his wife Dorothy and .several ch., among whom was Ann, then
aged fourteen years, A .sketch of the Lords will be found in Goodwin's "Genea
logical Notes."

SAMUEL, 3 was b. about 1680; he m. Esther Hammond, and settled in
Stonington, Conn., about 1709 or 1710. He d. April 24, 1728. Esther Hammond
w-as dau. Xathaniel. of Newton, and wife Mary. Nathaniel Hammond was b.
Mareli 12, 1643, s. Thomas and his wife Elizabeth, of Hingliam, Mass. Thomas
Hammond was b. in Lavenham, Suffolk, England, Jan. 9, 1587, and s. Thomas, of
that Parish, by his wife Rose Trippc, m. May 14, 1573.

J0NAS,4 was b. in Stonington, Conn., Sept. 28, 1710; he m, in 1733,
Lucy Dennison,-'' b. Oct. 15, 1714, and rlau. DanieH John'- George- William Den
ni.son.i William Dennisoni was of Ho.\biu-y in 1631, with his wife Margaret and
three sons, one of whom was George. George Dehnison,2 b. in England; m.. May,
1640, Bridget Thomson; she d. in 1643, and in August, of that year, he returned to
England, serving in the Parliamentary army. He m. there Ann, dau. John Borro-
dell, or Borrowdale, who gave her a home in Cork, Ireland; but he returned to
Roxbury. He was a distinguished leader in King Philip's war. He then lived in
New London, Conn. His son John, 3 was b. June 14. 1646. John Dennison3 m. .
in 1667, Phebe, dau. Robert and Sarah Lay, of Saybrook. His son Daniel was b.
March 28, 1680. Daniel Dennison,* m., Jan. 1, 1C03, Mary Stanton. Mary Stan
ton 3 was b. Feb. 3, 1687, dati. Robert - and Joanna (Gardner) Stanton. Robert
Avas son of the Thomas i we have mentioned before. Joanna was b. Jan. 25, 1657,
dau. Thomas and Lucy (Smith) Gardner, and probably gr. dau. of Thomas Gardner,
the first, of Roxbury.

SAMUEL PRENT1CE,5 known as Col. Samuel: b. Oct 4, 1736; d. in
Stonington, Conn., July, 1807. He m. Phebe Billings, who d. December, 1829.
aged 91; she was dau. EbenezerS Ebenezer2 s. William Billings, i of Dorchester or
Braintree, Mass. AVilliam Billings, ^ I am informed by that excellent authority.
Richard A. Wheeler, Esq., of Stonington, removed from Dorchester to that town;
his wife was named Maiy. His son Ebenezer Billings 2 m. Anna Comstock.
Ebenezer Billings 3 ni. Phebe Deunison. dau. John and Phebe (Lay) Dennison.
before mentioned; their dau. Phebe Avas b. in 1738. Samuel Prentice was Major
and Cjiptiiin of the 3d t'ompauy, 6th Regiment of troops raised in Connecticut in

SA:S[UEL.7 was I). March 31, 1782, in Stonington. In 1825, he became
Judge of the Supreme Court of Vermont; in 1829, was appointed Chief Justice; in
1830, became U. S. Senator from Vermont, which position he held until 1842; in
1842, he was appointed and unanimously confirmed as U. S. Judge for the District
of Vermont, w^hich position he held until his death, in 1857. He m., Oct. 3, 1804,

Ralph. 1 Ralph Houghton 1 was of Lancaster, Mass. ; his wife was Jane; his dau.
Mary was b. in 16o4. He was Town Clerk, and was Representative twice. The
birth of his .son James does not appear, but the identity appears by the will of
James, 2 made in 1711. His son Edward was b. in 1700; was tlie ancestor of the
Houghtons in Connecticut. He m. Abigail Coy, of Pomfret, Conn., March 15,
1777. He lived in Union, Conn. , and was a "housewright." His wife d. March
_ 30, 1777. Nehemiah^ was b. in 1738; settled in Winchester, N. H., and had four
sons and seven daus. ; his wife was Eunice Curtiss; his son Edward 5 was b. in
Winchester. July 21. 1760. Edward 5 m., Aug. 8, 1781, Sarah Smith, of Petersham.
Mass.: d. in Northfield, Mass., Sept. 29, 1820. Lucretia*^ was b. March 16, 1786.
and d. in 1855. Samuel Prentiss 7 was LL.D. ; at Dartmouth in 1832. His son

CHARLES WILLIAMS was b. Oct. 18, 1812; graduated at Dartmouth; a
lawyer in Vermont, in New York, and now (1880) in Cleveland, Ohio. He m. ;
Oct. 2, 1838. Caroline I^Kellogg, by whom his daii. Caroline Sophia § was b., Jan.
18,1842.

John 2 Lieut. Jo.seph.i of Hadley.

LIEUT. JOSEPH,! a weaver; freeman at Farmington, in 1654, Lieutenant
in the Falls tight with the Indians; and commanded the men of Hadley, having
.settled theere in 1661. His Is* wife was Joanna, mother of John. 2 bapt. Dec. 29,
1656. Lieut. Joseph had twenty-one ch. ; and although his descendants have not
done (^uite as well, it has been very common to have a baker's dozen.

JOHN KELL0GG,2 Hadley, d. between 1723 and 1728; he m., Dec. 1,
1680, Sarah, ■♦ dau. Samuel Moody,3 of Hadley, supposed to be the only son of
Deacon John Mood}', 2 of Hartford, and gr. .son of John Moody, of Moulton,
County Suffolk, England. Her mother was the daughter of John Deming, of
Weatherstield, Conn. John Kellogg had eleven ch., of whom Joseph 3 was b. Nov.
6, 1685.

JOSEPH KELL0GG,3 removed to South Hadley; he m., March 11, 1711,

Abigail. <lau. El)enezer Smith; hergr. fathers were Chiliab Smith and Brough-

ton; her mother's name being Abigail. He had eleven ch., of whom Jabez'* was b.
Feb. 11, 1734.

JABEZ KELLOGG,-* lived in South Hadley until 1785, when he removed
• to Hanover, N. H. He m. Abigail (CatlinV), who d. in Hanover, in 1788. They
had eleven ch., one of whom was Erastus,-'" b. Ai)ril 4, 1776.

ERASTUS KELLOGG.'^ setthid in Peachani, Vt., wliere lie d. in 1854.
