Wilmington, Del., 1864. He was the son of
a boatman, and born deaf and dumb. In 1827
he was apprenticed to C. G. Childs to be
taught engraving, and in 1830 produced some
excellent lithographic portraits, and became
the most noted and prolific lithographic artist
of his time.

Norman, John.

Born in England, 1748; died in Boston,
1817. First known work in "Swan's British
Architect," or "The Builder's Treasury ot
Staircases," published in Philadelphia, July 5,
1775. He engraved for a number of publi-
cations and magazines and in 1782 a series
of portraits. His chief claim to fame is the
fact that he was probably the first engraver
in America to attempt a portrait of Wash-
ington, about 1779.

bany and New York and became president of
the NAD in 1871-73. Hi earliest attempts
in engraving were made in 1834, when he en-
graved in mezzotint an excellent portrait of
Edwin Forrest, "the best specimen of that art
produced by an American."

Peale, Charles Willson.

Born Chestertown, Md., 1741; died in Phil-
adelphia, 1827. He began life as a saddler
and pursued portrait painting without regular
instruction until 1768, when he went to Eng-
land and resided in the household of Benja-
min West. He painted at Mount Vernon the
first and earliest authentic portrait of Wash-
ington, May, 1772. He was one of the found-
ers of The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts
in 1805, and a director until 1810.

Pekenino, Michele.

Very little is known of the Italian Peke-
nino, but in all probability he appeared in New
York in 1820. He located in Philadelphia in
1821-22, and became an intimate friend of
A. B. Durand, whose picture he engraved.
Most of his plates were engraved for Ameri-
can publisher?.

1722-25. He came to Boston prior to 1727,
since in that year he painted, engraved and
published a portrait of Cotton Mather. He
married Mrs. Mary Singleton Copley, the

can artist.
