Langhlln Block,
Angiotripsy.*
Dr. HughM. Taylor, of Richmond, Va.,
said his experience sustains the advantages
claimed for the angiotribe. In seclected
cases he thought it was a safe substitute for
forceps and ligature. It was very easy to
apply and this should commend it to those
who have not served a long apprenticeship
in the use of the ligature.
He was impressed by the commonly
observed fact that post-operative shock was
markedly diminished in the cases in which
he had used the angiotribe, and he thinks
this is equally true as to the intensity and
duration of post-operative pain. Con-
valescence seemed to be established at an
earlier date and to progress more rapidly.
In only one instance did he fail to secure
complete hemestasis by means of the an-
giotribe. This occurred in resecting a
section of badly infected omentum which
had wrapped up a necrotic appendix.
In all he had used the angiotribe in fifteen
cases, all of which were supra-pubic sec-
tions. He had not used it when operating
by the vaginal route. This was largely
due to the fact that he had had but a limit-
ed experience in working through the va-
gina. The encouraging reports from so
many, he thought, warranted the conclu-
sion that the angiotribe would find a large
field of usefulness through the vaginal
route.
A majority of his cases were very simple
in character, about one-half were uncom-
plicated hysterectomies, while the others
were types of cystomas. In only one in-
stance were there post-operative symptoms
which suggested the occurrence of hemor-
rhage. This case was a large unilocular
ovarian cystoma with extensive bowel ad-
hesions.
He had had no opportunity to use the
angiotribe in septic cases, but it seemed de-
sirable to avoid the use of the ligature in
existing or threatened septic conditions.
Many baci cases of head injury appear to
end fatally, owing to failure of the respir-
atory centres. In these cases the proper
treatment consists in the persistent use of
artificial respiration, with alternate heat
and cold to the chest and abdomen. These
measures may tide the patient over a dan-
gerous period and bring about an ultimate
recovery. — International Jour, of Surgery.

tic City meeting of the American Medical As-
sociation, Jan. 5, 1900.
