He was a salesman in stores at Lowell and Boston a
few years; then at Newport till he was married, when he
made his home at Ludlow, Vt., beginning business for
himself in a general store. In 1855 he sold out and re-
moved to Claremont, N. H., where he was in the dry-
goods business nearly twenty years. He then became
special adjuster for the Home Fire Insurance Company
of New York for Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont;
in 1877 he removed to Concord, N. H. Was representa-
tive to the legislature from Claremont in 1866 and 1867;
was bank commissioner, 1870 to 1874.

His life has thus been one of great activity and capa-
bihty; he has proved equal to the various responsibilities
placed upon him.

in the church. He died February 19, 1916.

829. Lowe' Emerson {Samuel^, DanieP, John*, SamueP,
John^, Michael^), born at Haverhill August 15, 1837;
married September 19, 1866, Maria Elizabeth, daughter
of Wilham and Laura (Jones) Knight, born at Panama,
N. Y., February 13, 1837.

He went to Cincinnati, 0., in 1856. Was in Kansas
in 1857, 1858 and 1859, during the struggle between free-
dom and slavery. Returning East, he was in New
Jersey when the War of the RebeUion broke out; while
at Trenton on business, he met the governor and was
asked to help in organizing; acted as|Post Adjutant and
went out to the front as Quartermaster of the 15th
Volunteer Infantry of the State. Served under General
Sheridan. Was A. A. D. C. of 1st Brigade, 1st Division
in the 6th Army Corps at Gettysburg and afterward.

When he first went to Cincinnati he identified himself
with the Congregational church; was chosen deacon;
later, making his home at the suburb of College Hill, he
joined the Presbyterian church and was made an elder.
He was long a trustee of Lane Theological Seminary.
His business was that of carriage making; he was the
first manufacturer to introduce the duplication of parts.
He was president of the Cincinnati Chamber of Com-
merce for a number of years; was a Free Mason and
identified with several clubs. He had a very clear mind
and a remarkable memory. He was successful in hfe by
reason of great diUgence and concentration and fidelity.
In his later years he spent part of the year at Clearwater,
Fla. He died June 2, 1916.

New Hampshire Heavy Artillery from September 19,
1864, till the close of the war.

He was a physician and surgeon. Resided some time
at Wentworth, N. H. He died at Dover, N. H., February
5, 1890.

913. James Cilley^ Emerson {Jefferson^, Solomon^,
Jonathan*, Solomon^, Samuel"^, Michael^), born at Barn-
stead, N. H., November 18, 1865; married November
4, 1893, Annie R., daughter of Eben and Jennie (Hodgdon)
Hanson, aged 21 ; she died January 10, 1899.

He was a student at Dartmouth College, class of 1893;
was a Congregational clergyman, ministering at Barn-
stead, Alton and Deerfield, N. H. He died September
20, 1897; in his will, dated September 2, proved in October,
1897, he left all his property to his wife, having already
provided for their daughter Florence.
