late as 1397 (Camhs. Fines, p. 140) "John Hampslap clerk" occurs
in connexion with Brentele and Westley Waterless. If he were
quite young in 1339, he might easily have survived till 1397.
(e) Liber Ilugucii. See Excursus F, p. 300.
(/) Pars Oculi. See ibid., p. 300.
(g) Ric. Large.

p. 84. Drayton. This is "Dry Drayton": "Fen D." is on
p. 134.

p. 85. (h) Joh. de Baston. We have also " Rad. de Beston."
p. 123 d. Baston and (de) Beston occur seven times in Cambs.
Fiiies, but no John or Ralph.

p. 86. Maddingele was one of the original donations to the
Canons of S. Giles by Picot (see Clark, op. cit., p. 40).

p. 87. {a) Albert does not occur in Mr Crosby's List of In-
cumbents of Madingley (E. D. R.).

p. 86. Stapleford seems to have belonged to the Monks of Ely
from 955 onwards (see Bentham, op. cit., p. 70 : also Cambs. Fines,
pp. 23 and 31).

p. 87. (6) Joh. de Ely. See Cambs. Fines, p. 97.

(c) Mag. R. rect. This is probably " Mast. Richard de
Otringham parson " of Gt Shelford (Cal. Pat. Rolls), to whom in
April 1298 a commission of official ty is issued in A^acancy of see
(Archbp Winchelsea's Reg., f. 241 6) : see Cambs. Fines, pp. 79 and 80.

(d) rachamas. See Index (B), p. 309.

(e) W. Lenne Regis. "Will. Thrifford alias dictus de Lenne,"
rector of Simondesburgh, Sarum, was collated to Gt Sh. in 1392.
" W. de Lenne " occurs much earlier in Cambs. Fines, p. 70. See
p. 49 d.

p. 89. (a) EUanora Frivele. Perhaps this is " Alienor de
Selford" in 1234 (Cambs. Fines, p. 20) but that is almo.st too early
for the script (B). (See Inti'oduction, p. xxxiv.) In 1346 "John de
Fryvyle and Elena his wife" occurs (Cambs. Fines, p. 110) but this
again is too late for B. Evelyn White (op. cit. p. 154) dates the
effigy of a Sir John de Freville between 1307 and 1327: this
Eleanor may have been his wife.

(b) Henr. de Stoke. This name occurs as " chaplain " in con-
nexion with Hardwick and Toft in 1343 (Cambs. Fines, p. 107).
See also at Hauxton below, p. 91 : the entry (erased) here is nearly
identical with that and was probably made in error.

(c) Ric. Cook. " Wm. Cok of parva Schelford " occurs in

1329 (Camhs. Fines, p. 96) and there is a " Robt. Cooke parson of
Little Shelford" in 1400 (p. 141). llichartl C. was probal)ly a
relation of these.

p. 88. Trippelawe was only appropriated to Peterhouse about
12S4 : hence the doubt about it suggested hy the non crossed out.

p. 89. Agnes de Warrinton. This is no doubt a mistake for
"Barrinton" as the "de B." family held land in Triplow (Clark,
op. cit., p. 250, and Cambs. Fines, p. 1.3) and Agnes de B. occurs
there twice in Rot. Hundr., u, 543 f. in Edw. I's reign.

{d) I. vicarius. "John de Hyndryngham " vicar in 1298
(As.size Roll).

(fi) Matilda de Qnot/e. The " de Quoye (Quej'e) " family are
several times mentioned in Cambs. Fines, but no Matilda.

(f) de opere Lemoycen. See Excursus F, p. 302.

((/) J oh. le Parker.

Henry. " H. Walter late parson of F." in 1394 [Harl. Chart.
50, I, 16).

(h) Alex. Dongre.

(i) Robert de Henle came here by exchange from Ross in
1342 : had a year's leave of absence in 1343 (Bp's Reg.).

p. 90. Neuton, a chapelry attached to Hauxton appropriated
to Prior of Ely by B. Hervey (1109-1133) (Bentham op. cit., p. 134).
p. 91. (a) Henr. de Stoke. See p. 89 b.

(b) Prioress of Holywell. Simon de Montacute, Bp of Ely
(1337-45), gave the presentation of T. to the Benedictine nuns
of Holywell in S. Leonard's parish, Shoreditch : it was appro-
priated in 1344 (Dugdale, Monast., iv, p. 391) : see Cambs. Fines,
p. 104.

(c) Nicholas. '? " Nich. de Drayton, chaplain" at Tr. in 1316
(Cambs. Fines, p. 83).

(d) Roger de Tr. See above, p. 3iy!

(e) Anys Tynecote. This is no doul)t " Avicia formerly wife
of Hugh de Tykyncote at Trumpeton " in 1348 {Camhs. Fines,
p. 112: cf. p. 109).

p. 92. Hardleston (= Harston) was appropriated to the Canons
of S. Giles by Picot in 1092 (Clark, op. cit., p. 40).

p. 93. (a) Eva de Typetot. The Tiptofts were owners of
Harston manor before 1300, Clark {ojy. cit., p. 126) and onwards,
e.g. in 1369 {Cambs. Fines, p. 122).

{b) Rich. vie. It is tempting to conjecture that this is

"Richard de "Ware, parson of the church of Harleton " (in error
for Hardleston) in 1304 (Cavibs. Fines, p. 70).

(c) Adam Prat. There were Prats at Long Stowe {Cambs.
Fines, pp. 83 and 102, see also p. 136).

((/) Foxton was appropriated to the Prior and Canons of Ely
by Bp Hugo de Balshani in r275 (Bentham, op. cit., pp. 128 and
150). The correction " elemosinar'" in F's hand suggests that it
was not assigned to their Almoner at first, though Bentham states
that it was.

(e) Reginald vie. Mr Crosby quotes from a Petworth MS.
{Hist. MSS. Comiaiss. Report, p. 77) "Reginald de Ely" presented
in 1335 to F. by Prior and Convent of Ely : and his name occurs
also in a Gaol Delivery Roll. But the date conflicts with ours
(1308).

p. 92. (/() Shepreth was appropriated to the Benedictine nuns
of Chatteris by Bp Eustace of Ely (t 1220), Dugdale, MonasL, ii,
p. 615. The house, which was founded about 980 by Alfwen wife
of King Athelstan, was completely destroyed by fire, circ. 1304-10,
and not rebuilt for some 30 years,

p. 93. (i) Will, de le Hay. One of this name, styled miles,
had licence of oratory in Shepreth from the Abbess of C. (Dugdale,
loc. cit.). "John de la Hay chivaler " was Lord of the Manor of
Shepereth about 1329 {Cambs. Fines, pp. 97, 98, 100 and 103):
cf. p. 133 a.

p. 95. {a) Nich. quondam rector. Malton is now absorbed in
Orwell and the Church ruinated.

(6) BarringtoH was appropriated to S. Michael's house in
1327 (1) {Cambs. Fines, p. 95).

(c) Joh.de Langele, vicar of B., was licensed Dec. 8, 1349, to
absolve his parishioners in all cases reserved to the Bp, the five
excepted (Bp's Reg.) : for these five see p. 26 ; cf. Introd. p. xvii.

p. 96. («) Haslingfeud was appropriated to the (mitred)
Abbat of S. Mary's, York (founded by Will. II, 1089), by Roger de
Sumery in the reign of Henry II or earlier (Dugdale, Monast., iii,
p. 534).

p. 97. (6) John de Woketon, vicar of H. in March 1355
(Cal. Pap. Reg.), still there in 1361. " John vie. of H." is appointed
Penitentiary for the deanery in Sept. 1337 (Bp's Reg.). This is

hardly likely to be "de Wokton " but it may be "J. Malerbt; " or
" J. Lo\ el " in what appears to be an earlier entry.

(c) J oh. Malerhe. See above : " Michael Malherbe " occurs at
Cambridge (Canibs. Fines, pp. 2 and 22).

(d) John Lovel. See above, and again p. 1 05 a.

(e) Joanna relict of Walt. Neve.

p. 99. (a) Hartoii, appropriated to the Prior of Merton (in
Surrey) in 1202 (Dugdale, Monast., vi, p. 246 : see also Cambs.
Fines, p. 9 in 1215).

Nicholas vicar. One of this name succeeded John le Blund as
vicar of B. in 1253 (Assize Rolls).

{d) Graiitchester, appropriated to 8. Benet's Coll. in 1.379 by
purchase.

(e) Thos. de Pateslinll, rector in 1324 (Masters, Hist, of
Corpus, p. 14) : brother of Sir Walter de P., Lord of the Manor.

(y*) Jacobus Granceie. There was a manor of Jak (or Jakea)
in G. (sometimes called Andwyl) : see Cooper^ Annals, i, p. 120
(in 1381).

(g) Ric. Titeshall occurs as rector in the deed of appropria-
tion 1379, appointed by his predecessor.

p. 98. 6'o^e.s = Coton now, not Coates near Whittlesey,

p. 99. (/<) Ric. Wijmark.

p. 100. Cumberton, appropriated to the Canons of S. Giles by
Picot, 1092 (Clark, op. cit., p. 40).

p. 101. (a) Domlna Merk. " Isabel' de Merk " at Royston in 1 279
{(Jambs. Fines, p. 51). We have also " Wm. de Merks " at Cum-
berton in 1251 (p. 33). I have little doubt this is "Willelmus
Bercarius" father or son who held land in C. (Clark, op. cit., p. 300).
See Rot. Uundr., ii, pp. 654 f.

Reginald vie. " Reg. de C." occurs in 1298 (Cambs. Fines, p. 66)
but there is nothing to suggest he was this man.

Joh. Dyngne was vicar of W. and dean of Brunne in 1377 : in
March 1378 he was instituted to S. Edward's, Cambridge : in 1381
he exchanged with a Mast. John de Eggemere. John Dyne occurs
again as vicar of S. Edw. 1406-1431 ; this was a junior man, as in
July 1382 John D. senior was presented to the chantry in Box worth
church (Bp's Reg.). [Information from Mr Crosby.]

(b) R. Peverel. The surname occurs several times in Carnbs.
Fines : also Robt Peverel and Uich. P. in Hunts. {Rot. Uundr., u,
pp. 628 and 631).

246 NOTES ON THE TEXT

(c) Gilbert le Rous, rector in 1337 (when he appears in an
assault case) and up to 1345 (Bp's Reg.). For an account of this
family see Stokes Outside Trump. Gates, pp. 35 if.

{d) J oh. Koketihach. In Nov. 1377 John Cokenache of
Coventry (Lichfielcl dio.) was collated to W. (acolyte and sub-deacon
13 March 1377-8 : deacon June 1378 : priest Sept. 1378). (Bp's
Reg.)

Strangely enough the Camb. Univ. Libr. MS. 2452 gives
another John Cokenache as parson of W. in 1306 {1 an error).
[Mr Crosby's information.]

(e) camaca. See Index (B), p. 308.

p. 102. (a) Arringtou.. The date of the appropriation is not
known but in 1402 the Prioress states that her house only held two
livings with cure, viz. Ickleton and Arrington (Dugdale, Monast.,\w,
p. 439).

p. 103. (b) E. aite Lane. " Robt. fil' William atte Lane of
Wykes and Agatha his wife" occurs in 1293 {Cambs. Fines, p. 61) :
this may be his son.

(c) Rog. Depham. " John de Depham " in 1360 [Suffolk Fines,
p. 227).

(d) Rog. de lluntiiigfeld. See p. 61 d. It does not appear
that one of this name was ever "rector of Orwell," nor, as Cole
MSS. assert, of Barton in 1256. Is it not possible that a layman
(who may also have been styled " Magister ") is meant ? Roger was
a frequent name in the family. " Roger de H. succeeded his father
in 1286 and died in 1301 " (Raven, Suffolk, p. 78). '^ Roger de H."
is connected with Harleton in 1 313 {Cambs. Fines, p. 80), and "Roger
de H. junior" with Orwell in 1338 (p. 103). "Rog. son and heir
of Will. H." in 1316 (Redstone, Nomina villaimm go. Suff., Suffolk
Inst, of Archaeol., vol. xi, p. 187).

(e) bord' Alissaudre. See Index (B), p. 308.

(_/â– ) Eliseus ^ (Elisha, not Elijah strictly) : " Elias Chancellor
of Arlichsey priest " was presented to Orwell rectory in Feb. 1 347-8
by Sir Edw. de Kendale and .John de Wylie, rector of Walton-on-
Thames. When he was admitted in July 1349, he is given as
" Elyas le Chaunceler."

p. 104. Craudeti. It does not appear when Croydon was appro-
priated, but some of the tithe was given to the Canons of S. Giles
by Picot in 1092 (Clark, op. cit., p. 40).

p. 105. {a) Rad. Lovel. This name occurs at Harleton in /^o^.

(d) I/err' Chaler — Henry d'Eschalers, who succeeded J. Lacy
in 1330 as parson of H. He is mentioned as much in debt (1341-7).
(Bp's Reg.)

There is an interesting entry, in which R. de Huntingtield, Ric.
de K. and Hen. d'Esch. are all mentioned, in Bp's Reg. May 1349,
about a dispute as to the right of presentation of his successor
(Roger de Tyffield).

Richard is Rect. in 1288 and "Rich, de Stow " in 1298: in July
1374 there is a "Rich, de Stow," rector of Hardwick, who has tive
years leave of absence (Assize Rolls).

(e) W. Tykhill, " parson of E. H.", is dispensed of illegitimacy
in 1333 (Papal Letters) : see also Bp's Reg. 13'54(?).

Reginald: "Reg. Outlawe of Brunne, rect. of E. H." exchanged
in 1341 with Thomas de Eure of Blakolmslee.

(/") Thomas Upton. The surname recurs at Boxworth
(p. 139 n.). There is no T. Upton found at E. H. so far; but
T. de Eure of last note exchanged for Queryngton in 1343 and T.
de Alston (or Aston) of Fulbourne was rect. of E. H. in 1344 and
1347.

Tadlow in 134 7 (Bp's Reg.).

p. 106. Clopton is now consolidated with Croydon, the church
having been taken down in 1591 (Evelyn Wliite, op. cit., p. 57).

sented by Rich, and Thos H. in Jan. 1392, is too late ibr the script.

died rect. of CI. in Jan. 1392/3.

248 NOTES ON THE TEXT

p. 106. (./) Kneesivorth is now a hamlet of Bassingbourne,
and the " capella " has disappeared.

(A) Shingay was originally the property of Roger, Earl of
Arundel and Shrewsbury. In 1140 his daughter Sibylla de Reynes
founded a Preceptory of Knights Hospitallers there, to whom she
gave the manor (Lysons, Camhs. ) : the appropriation therefore
probably dates from about 1140. The chapel of the Preceptory
was used as the church of the parish (Evelyn White, p. 156), but
becoming ruinous, it was destroyed in 1820, and a new church has
since been built and annexed to Wendy. Unless this original entry
is incorrect or was made aftei' the suppression of the Templars,
Mr White would seem to be mistaken in saying that the Hospitallers
took it over from the Templars in 1312 : see Wendy below.

p. 107. (/) Will. Kydman exchanged Shingay for Tadlow in
1379, and in 1385 exchanged again to Idelstre in dio. of Line.
(Bp's Reg.). "Thos. K." of Shingay occurs in 1328 (Bp's Reg.).

p. 108. (a) Wendeye passed from the Templars to the Hospi-
tallers in 1312. One of the three manors at W. had been given to
the Knights Templars by Sir Robert d'Engayne in or before the
reign of Edw. II (Lysons).

p. 109. Robert vie. " Robert de Smethfield " was vicar of W.
in 1308 (Land Revenue records).

(6) templum d\o7nini\ What this was does not appear, but it
naturally connects itself with the Templars to which the church
once belonged and with the other strange expression velum templi
which so puzzles one in these inventories. See Excursus F, p. 302.
p. 108. (c) Waddon was appro()riated (though it is not stated
here) in 1351 to the King's new college of S. George's, Windsor.

p. 109. ((/) Ric. Nateshy, rector of moiety of Rotherham, pre-
sented to Whaddou in Feb. 1344 by Earl of Warwick : mentioned as
clerk of Ely dio. who had died before 1 353 (Bp's Reg.). The surname
occurs at W. in 1349 and 1368 {Camhs. Fines, pp. 112 and 124).

p. 108. Melreth was ai)propriated to the Prior of Ely by Bp
Hervey (1109-1133) for the hostelry (Bentham, op. cit., pp. 128
and 134 : see also Givmbs. Fines, p. 7).

Roger was vicar there in 1288 (Assize Roll).

p. 110. (a) Hospitale de cruce Boys. The Lady Roesia, wife

of Eudo Dapifer, the Norman, set up a wayside cross where the

Icknield Way crosses Ermine Street, and there 100 years later the

Priory of S. Thomas of Canterbury was founded soon after his

inartyi-dom by Eustace de Mark and called de cruce Koesie. This
was the origin of the modern town of Royston (Conybeare, Hist, of
Cambs., p. 113).

(6) Abbi)igton (in the Clay or iuxta Shingay), now called
A. Piggotts from the family of that name who became the chief
landowners in the 15th cent.

p. Ill, (c) Alan red. "Alan le Moigne " of Abb. occurs
twice in 1311, Cambs. Fiiies, p. 78 : possibly this is his sou.

(d) Roger de Goldborne was rector of Bassingbourn, 1375,
till his death in 1379/80 (Bp's Reg.).

p. 110. (e) Capella de {Stepe) Mordon. This can hardly be
the " capella de Redreth " in Guilden Morden parish which is entered
(by B^) on the next page and has quite a different set of books, ii:c.
Is it Odsey? Clark, op. ciL, p. 196, has " Stapel mordane cum
capellis " in 1256.

p. 111. Tvu Everard. The surname occurs at Grantchester in
1285, at Impingtou and Histon in 1419, at Wysbeche in 1483.

p. 112. Guilden Morden was part of the original donation of
Picot to the Canons of St Giles in 1092 (Clark, op. cit , p. 40).

p. 113. (ft) Will. Oseberti. " W. Osebern tenet de Will Knotte "
aliout 1230 at Guilden Morden (Clark, op. cit., p. 290): " Jolni
son of Osbert v. William Osebern " and wife and son at Tatington
in 1280 [Suffolk Fines, p. 80, and elsewhere). Whether Osebert
here and Osbert there is an error for Osbern is uncertain, but it
seems likely, Osbert being a Christian name. See also Cambs. Fines,
pp. 91, &.C.

(6) Will. Moins. " Will. Moigne and wife " at Little Shelf <>rd
in 1329 (Cambs. Fines, p. 96).

(c) W. Brith 1 ^ ''Bvid" as on p. 83 above and on p. 165
(R. Bryth) : cf. also Cambs. Fines, p. 145 (J. Bryght).

(d) Roger Pnjvet.

Robert lobrav ? = Sudbury. "John de Sudbery chivaler"
occurs in connexion with " Mordene " in 1323 and 1337. Cambs.
Fines, pp. 90 and 102. Or peihaps "Arneburgh" is meant (see pp.
124 and 127 : in the latter place "Robert Arneborugh " in 1483
occurs).

p. 112. (e) Redreth capella, 1 dedicated to S. Etheldreda : no
trace of the building left but some beams in a farmhouse north of
church are said to have come from it. It was given by Picot to the
Canons of S. Giles in 1092 (Clark, op. cit., p. 40).

is rather late for C-'s hand. (See Introduction, p. xxxv.)
