COMPILER'S NOTE.
HE study of Wills for genealogical and biographical
purposes is becoming more and more general. Wills
are of the deepest human interest. Edgar Vine Hall,
in his Romance of Wills and Testaments, has well said :
*' In Wills, human nature is most vividly and variously
displayed; in Wills the dead speak, and in a manner live
again. The poor and the rich, men learned and men
illiterate, all alike have made interesting Wills. In some
cases humour and pathos are more unconscious, in others
opportunity for effect is greater; but in wills of every class,
and of every age or form, there is much worthy of remark.
Historically they are invaluable records. In them sure
reflected all social, political, and religious revolutions. By
them the history of families or places is preserved and
illuminated. As long ago as the sixteenth century
John Stow realised their value, and often referred to them
in his Survey of London. No local record to-day would be
complete without the wills of its worthies."
Among English Wills, not the least interesting and valuable
are the early Wills relating to the County of Suffolk, as is
witnessed by Wills and Inventories from the Register of the
Commissary of Bury St. Edmunds and the Archdeaconry of
Sudhury,^^^ by the late Samuel Tymms, F.S.A., first Secretary
of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology, and the later Wills printed
in Muskett's Suffolk Manorial Families, Elxeter, 1894-1908, in
The Register of English Monumental Inscriptions, and in the
East Anglian Miscellany.
To bring to the would-be Student of Suffolk Wills in a
compact, handy and useful form, a list (of easy reference) of all
Wills relating to that County proved in the Prerogative Court
of Canterbury is the purpose of this Calendar.
In it, under Parishes and Places alphabetically arranged, I
have given every Will in chronological order, and have added
thereto an Index of Testators. I venture to hope that it will
thus deserve a place in the Reference Library by the side of.

and form an almost indispensable companion to, the invaluable
and sumptuously printed Ipswich Wills from the justly famed
Private Press of Mr. F. A. Crisp, F.S.A,, and the admirably
compiled Calendar of Wills at Bury St. Edmunds,^^^ recently
published by the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology,
In compiling the Calendar 1 have chiefly availed myself of
the Index of the British Record Society (4 vols.), now somewhat
rare and costly to acquire.
Should the book meet with acceptance, and the publishers
at least secure reimbursement, 1 shall feel encouraged to
complete a similar list from 1604 to 1800, some seventy years
of which are already in MS.
In conclusion, I desire gi'atefully to acknowledge the
generous sympathy of Mr. H. W. B. Way man, at whose expense
the Calendar has been prepared, and my indebtedness to
Mr. T. W. Oswald-Hicks, the Hon. Secretary of the English
Monumental Inscriptions Society and Editor of its Register, for
