TRANSCRIBED AND EDITED BY

FRANCIS COLLINS.

PRIVATELY PRINTED FOR
THE YORKSHIRE PARISH REGISTER SOCIETY.

1899.

KNIGHT AND FORSTER, PRINTERS, LEEDS.

PREFACE.

The City of York is rich in Churches, and consequently in
Parish Registers also. These cannot fail to be interesting to a
large number of Yorkshiremen, because many of our County
Families sprang from amongst its citizens, and many of the junior
members of other families of distinction, in the county, were brought
up and followed their professions or callings here. As the capital
of the north, also, York was the resort of many persons in the
highest stations of life, from all parts of the kingdom, so there can
be no town in the county, and perhaps in the kingdom, London
excepted, in which the Parish Registers can equal, in interest, those
of York. Amongst the Parishes of York, more importance is,
perhaps, conceded to the Registers of St. Michael le Belfrey than
to those of any of the others ; partly through its connection with the
Minster, which stands in this Parish, and partly because it appears
to have been looked upon as the fashionable church to be married
in. It would seem, therefore, to be most fitting that the earlier
portion of the Registers of this church should form the first volume
of the Yorkshire Parish Register Society's issues.

The Registers of the Parish of St. Michael le Belfrey commence
n 1565, and the Society, in its first volume, is issuing to its members
the contents of the two earliest Registers, covering the years 1565,
to October, 1653.

The earliest Register is a paper volume of 70 leaves. It
appears to have been covered, originally, with a portion of an old
missal, which was retained, as an inside cover, when the volume
was placed in its present binding. As mentioned above, it
commences in 1565, and contains the Baptisms, Marriages, and
Burials from that date down to 1605. It is written in English,
each page being divided into three columns. The Baptisms occupy

vi. PREFACE.

the left, or first column, the Marriages the centre, and the Burials
the right, or third column. As there were fewer Marriages in each
year than either Baptisms or Burials, portions, or the whole of some
of the centre columns are occupied by one or other of these.

This Register may be said to be in a fair condition, and not
difficult, except in a few instances, to decipher. The corners of
some of the leaves have suff'ered from decay and use, and here and
there the edges are rubbed and worn, with the result that a few
names have been obliterated, or torn off, still, considering that it is
a paper Register, and one that has, evidently, been much searched,
it has suffered, comparatively, but little. One leaf, however,
containing the Baptisms between December the 15th, 1602, and
May the 8th, 1603, the Marriages between February the 20th,
1602-3, and October the 2nd, 1603, and the Burials between
November the 19th, 1602, and August the 30th, 1603, is missing.
Fortunately, there is a Register marked " Duplicate," which
commences with the year 1603 and extends to 1641, that supplies
the missing entries for 1603 (reckoning the year as commencing
March the 25th), but not those for 1602. This, as the earliest
Register, is of paper, and, with the exception of one or two leaves,
is in excellent condition, and being much more legibly written than
Volume II., it was used, in preference, by the Transcriber in making
his copy. He, however, re-read and corrected his work by the
Second Volume, and where names or their spelling, dates, or other
matters differed materially (certain entries were occasionally fuller
in one volume than in the other), both renderings are given in the
text, the one being placed in brackets.

The second Register is of parchment ; it is written in English,
and the arrangement, both in this and the duplicate, is the same as
in the First Volume. It contains 70 leaves, commencing with the
year 1606, and ending with September, 1653.

A few leaves at the end of the First Volume are blank, others
are filled with matters of some interest. First we have the fees,
here called " Church Duties," payable on various occasions to the
Incumbent and Parish Clerk. These are followed by a portion, or
the whole, of the Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials in the Parish of
St. John del Pike, for the year 1579. Then on another page there

PREFACE. vii.

are some notes regarding the children of Henry Prockter, Mr.
Topham, and Mr. Lister. Seven blank pages follow, and after these
are four pages containing the names of Communicants at the
principal Feasts, from Penticost, 1572, to All Saints Day, 1578.
These, it will be observed, are far from being numerous, but it is
interesting to find among them the names of Edward Fawx and his
wife, the father and mother of Guy Fawx, the conspirator, whose
baptism is to be found on page 8 of this volume. His father died
in 1578, and was buried in the Minster.

In the second Register, one blank leaf follows the last entries,
and on the next leaf there are notices of gifts of *' Towells," to carry
the poor of the parish to church to be buried, of a ** Lynnen clothe
to cover the Comunyon table," and " a greene taffety cloth, lyned
with blew serge," probably for the same purpose.

There is no list of Incumbents in any of the Registers.

Thanks are due to the Rev. E. S. Carter, the Vicar, for readily
complying with all the requests of the Transcriber, and for giving
him every opportunity in his power to complete his transcript as
early as possible, so that this volume may be placed in the hands
of the members before the expiration of the year.
