GENERAL HEAD QUARTERS, STATE OF CONNECTICUT.

Adjutant-General's Office, )
Hartford, December 10th, 1864. } ,

By the Resolutions of the General Assembly
directing the publication of a roll of Connecticut
Volunteers, it is provided that one copy shall be fur-
nished to the First Selectman and one copy to the
Town Clerk of each town.

This Catalogue will therefore constitute a part of
the public records of the town, and each Selectman
and each Town Clerk who shall receive a copy will
carefully preserve the same, and whenever he shall
retire from his position will haivd it over to his
successor in office.

HORACE J. MORSE,

Adjutant-General.

PREFACE

The names of all volunteers reported to this office are given in this
catalogue, together with casualties up to July 1st, 1864.

In some instances the roll maybe imperfect, and volunteers improperly
reported from the met that the returns received at this office after the
organizations entered the field are not in all cases complete. It is also
probable that men are here reported as deserters, who are not actually and
intentionally guilty of that crime. Soldiers upon furlough on account of
wounds or sickness are often unable to return to their commands on expi-
ration of furlough, but report at a United States Hospital or other proper
locality. From the fact that notice of their so reporting is not received
by their regimental or company commanders, the men are borne on the
company rolls as deserters.

The names of drafted men held to service, and substitutes accepted
under the draft of 1863, will not be found in the catalogue unless they
actually reached the regiments to which they were assigned, and are
taken up on the regimental rolls received at this office.

In the 1st Artillery, 1st Light Battery, 1st Cavalry and Infantry regi-
ments, up to and including the Thirteenth, a large number re-enlisted
under the orders of the War Department prior to the expiration of their

original term of service, and the remark " re-enlisted as a veteran 186 "

is here borne opposite their names on the rolls of the first enlistment.
Although on the records of the office the names have been transferred to
new roll books, it is not deemed necessary to repeat them in the catalogue.
In many cases however the men are credited to a different locality on their

11 PREFACE.

re-enlistment from that stated at their first enlistment. The town here
given as the volunteer's residence is that from which he originally enlisted.

It is not expected that the catalogue can be used as a basis to show the
actual credits to the several towns.

The rank given officers in the column of remarks where they have been
promoted, is that held on the first of July, 18G4, if then in service, or at
the date of discharge, if discharged prior to that term. The interme-
diate grades held by officers who have been several times promoted are
not stated on account of the necessarily limited space for remarks. This
information is given in the Register of Commissioned Officers in the
several reports from this Department.

A portion of the colored men who were accepted as drafted men or
substitutes under the draft of 1863, were assigned to the 14th R. I. Heavy
Artillery, as at that time there was no organization of colored men in the
field from Connecticut. A list of these men is inserted. The remainder
were detained on duty at Draft Rendezvous, New Haven, Ct., until the
organization of the 30th Regiment Connecticut Volunteers, (Colored,)
and were then assigned to that regiment.

Adjutant-General's Office,

Hartford, December 10, 1864.
