(20) WILLIAM^ CORNWALL (Wiltiam-, William^), born
Sept. 13, 1671; died July 16, 1747; married Jan. 22, 1692,
Esther, daughter of John and Mary (Harris) Ward of Mid-
dletown, and granddaughter of Andrew Ward, who was
Deputy Governor of Connecticut with Ludlow in 1634, etc.
She died July 13, 1734, aged 66. He removed to East Middle-
town, Conn, (now Portland), probably before 1700, and settled
back of Wangunk Meadows on land originally laid out to his
grandfather. In 171 1 he was chairman of the committee of
three appointed to build the first meeting house in East Middle-
town, in which he was the first tithing man. He established
the first grist mill in East Middletown, in partnership with
Thomas Miller. He was selectman in 1727 and 1728. In
1736 he deeded about two hundred and fifty acres of land to
his son William, and about one hundred and fifty acres of land,
with his house and barn, to his son Andrew, and divided

between them his interest in the grist mill and his rights in the
undivided lands of the town. Children born in East Middle-

10, 1 77 1, aged 88. He lived in Middletown. Was called
"mariner" in 17 13, when he was granted liberty to erect a wharf
in Middletown. Was selectman in 1731. His will mentions
wife Edith, sons James and Francis, children of his son Daniel
deceased, viz. : Daniel, Jacob, Isaac and Nathaniel, daughters
Edith, Hannah and Ruth, and heirs of daughter Mary, deceased.

died April 16, 1769. He lived in East Middletown, where he
had a gristmill. His father deeded about 250 acres of land to
him in 1736. His will, dated Sept. 9, 1754, mentions his son
John, daughters Esther and Rachel, and grandson Nathaniel.

dletown. His father deeded about 150 acres of land to him in
1736. He was selectman in 1731. His will, dated Jan. 17,
1756, mentions wife, daughters Mary and Sarah, sons Andrew,
Thomas and Timothy. Children born in East Middletown,
Conn.
