Mr. Hunkins — familiarly known as Harry Hunkins —
was a private in the 48th Regt. Wis. Inf., in the civil war.
His regiment was ordered west at the close of the war, to
escort the U. S. Mails and travelers through the then hostile
Indian country.

His young bride accompanied him to the Island of
Cebu; remained a year, and returned to her mother's home
in Tennessee, finally rejoining her husband at Fort Mc-
Pherson.
