Rear-Adm.4th Battle Squadron 1914-17 and Assistant
Chief of the Naval Staff and a Lord of the Admiralty

Protectorate ; was temp. Lieut.-Col. Nyasaland Field
Force 1914-18, and as Chief Political Officer adminis-
tered the Mil. Government of the S.W. Area of German
E. Africa 1916-17 ; appointed Acting Governor and
Commander-in-Chief of Nyasaland 1918 ; is a Member
