PREFACE.

The Registers of Hackness Parish commence in the year 1557,
and those transcribed in the present volume are contained in two
Books, one dating from 1557 to 1653, and the other from 1653 to
1783. These Books are written upon parchment and were rebound
in vellum during the Incumbency of the late Rev. Joseph Irvin,
who was Vicar of Hackness from 1841 to 1856.

The first volume which covers the years 1567 to 1653 contains
fifty-five leaves, and the second 1653 to 1783 contains sixty-one
leaves. A large portion of the Register was inscribed by John
Richardson, who subscribed himself "The Parish Register," and
who appears to have held that office from 1630 to 1668 at least.
His signature appears for the last time in that year, but two later
pages seem to be in his handwriting, though they are not signed.

The handwriting of the Registers varies considerably. In the
Eli^abethian portion the letters, though very small, are beautifully
formed, and retain the Gothic character, the capitals being specially
decorative. The pages subscribed by John Richardson also display
much care in the formation of the letters, but towards the close of
the succeeding century the Registers are much more carelessly
written, and the orthography suggests that the entries were made
by a succession of somewhat iDiterate Parish Clerks. As a whole
the Registers are fairly legible, but in some instances the entries are
much defaced, and I have here to acknowledge the invaluable
assistance of Dr. Francis Collins, whose great skill and long
experience rescued from oblivion many words and phrases which
would otherwise have been lost.

Although there are few direct references to events of national
importance (with the exception of the entry which records the
death of Ohver Cromwell on September 3rd, 1658, and the
proclamation of his son Richard as Lord Protector), yet, suggestions
of the march of events are conveyed from time to time. That one,
at least, of the Recusants had friends at Hackness may be inferred
by the entry under date September 2nd, 1661, where John
Richardson records that a child of Mr. Thomas Moore was
"privately baptised, it is supposed by a Popish Priest, being a
stranger then at the Manor " ; and the early history of the Society
of Friends receives some interesting sidelights from the entries
under dates of September xiij, 1653, and January xxj, 1655.

John Richardson himself unconsciously reveals a marked
character-study, in his interpolations of notes on parochial events,
and his meterological observations. His records of great storms in
1659 ^^^ 1660 may be noted, and traces of a love of neighbourly
gossip and elderly garrulousness creep into his entries during his
later years. Indeed the portion of the Registers for which he is
responsible, is a very "human" document, and his detailed
accounts of extraordinary births, and mishaps from violence of
weather, add a distinct local colour to his official chronicle.

The thanks of the Society are due to the Vicar of Hackness,
the Rev. Charles Johnstone, for his great kindness in allowing the
transcription of his Registers, and also for assisting in the work.
