Upper Alton, 111., son of Amos and Elizabeth (Stark-
weather) Dodge, born in Jersey ville, 111., February 27, 1836.
He graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, 111., 1855 ; was

for nine years a teacher in the Deaf and Dumb School
at Jacksonville, 111.; twelve years Principal of Shurtleff
Academy ; afterwards Master of the Wyman Institute, now
Western Military Academy in Upper Alton; also Trustee
and Treasurer of Shurtleff College; at. the time of his death,
February 7, 1891, he had been for several years in the real
estate business in St. Louis. He was instantly killed by
an engine coming unexpectedly through a fog. He was
pre-eminently successful in his dealings with young men in
college classes, and in Sunday-school work, a man of marked
ability and special purity of life and purpose. Mrs. Dodge
has been Professor of English Literature at Shurtleff Col-
lege, now Instructor in Elocution and Literature at Western
Military Academy in Upper Alton, 111. (1903).

clergyman of the Presbyterian Church, graduated from Yale
College, i860; settled in May, 1865, over the Congregational
Church in Middle Haddam, Conn.; removed to Joliet, 111.,
November, 1866; to Wappinger's Falls, N. Y., January, 1870;
to the Union Evangelical Church at Corona, N. Y., July,
1874; to Jersey City, N. J., October, 1878; to New Hartford,
N. Y., April, 1 89 1. He married, May 1 1, 1865, Sarah Cecilia,
daughter of Rev. Dr. John McMillan and Cecilia Hadassah
(Gillespie) Stevenson, born in Gambier, Ohio, April 12, 1840.
From May, 1873, to February, 1889, he was an editor of
" The Illustrated Christian Weekly," published until August,
1887, by the American Tract Society, afterwards by private
parties. He now resides in New Hartford, N. Y.

of the Presbyterian Church ; graduated from Yale College,
1863; he married, June 24, 1869, Sophie Howard Thayer,
daughter of Stephen Howard and Harriet (Holden) Thayer,
born June 15, 1845; die ^ November 2, 1873. He supplied
the pulpit of the Presbyterian Church in Rome, N. Y., in
1869-70. He was pastor of the Presbyterian Church in
Newark, Ohio, 1870-77 ; of the Congregational Church, Am-
herst, Mass., 1877. He died in Amherst, September 28,
1878. "During his brief pastorate in Amherst he won the
love of his people as few ministers have done before or
since, and his death caused mourning in the parish and in

1542 Major Henry Peeble 8 Kingsbury, U. S. Army,
{Russell H.\ Horatio G.\ Eleazar\ Eleazar\ Joseph 3 , Joseph'*,
Henry 1 '), was graduated from West Point, June 12, 187 1,
Second Lieutenant, Sixth U. S. Cavalry; First Lieutenant,
Sixth Cavalry, January 27, 1875 ; Captain, Sixth Cavalry,
October 5, 1887; Major, Third Cavalry, January 23, 1900.
He married, June 11, 1889, Florence Elizabeth Slocum, born
July 24, 1859, in Syracuse, N. Y., daughter of Henry W. and
Clara A. (Rice) Slocum. Major Kingsbury has served many
years on the frontier in Indian wars. He was for five years
on the staff of General O. O. Howard at Governor's Island,
as Inspector of Rifle Practice, from 1890 to 1895. He served
in the Spanish-American War, and commanded his troop in
the battle of San Juan Hill, Santiago, July 2 and 3, 1898, and
in the subsequent siege. Commanded Fort Myer, Va., from
January to July, 1900; then was ordered to China, but on
arriving at Nagasaki, Japan, Pekin having fallen, was or-
dered with his squadron to Luzon, and is now serving in
Northern Luzon, in the Province of Ilocos (1901). He was
recommended for a brevet for gallantry at San Juan Hill.

and a descendant of Captain Thomas Bull, who held the
fort at Saybrook. She died October 15, 1898.

Oak, Iowa, where he was educated at the high school, and

a farmer in Rushford, where he died May 9, 1894.

Company D, 13th New York Heavy Artillery; discharged
as Second Lieutenant, June, 1865. He married, October 4,
1866, Effie J. Foster, born October 6, 1848, in Bradford, Pa.,
daughter of C. H. Foster. He carries on the business of
cheesemaking.

teacher of the art department of Cazenovia Seminary for
several years before, and at the time of her death, June 17,
1896, and was an artist of more than ordinary ability.

1646 Herbert Alan 8 Kingsbury {Samuel Newell 1 , Ja-

bez\ Nathaniel 5 , Jabez\ Nathaniel*, Joseph', Henry 1 ), of New
York City; was graduated with valedictory at Columbia Col-
lege, 1879. Soon after his graduation he was offered the
chair of Belles Lettres at that institution, but declined in order
to study law, and was graduated from the Columbia Law
School; admitted to the Bar of New York in 1881, and prac-
ticed his profession in that city. He was regarded as an able
and brilliant lawyer. He married, June 17, 1884, Elizabeth
Agnes Brown, daughter of Joseph Outerbridge and Harriet
(Parsons) Brown, of New York City. Mr. Brown was a law-
yer, and his wife was a daughter of Dr. Ezekiel Parsons of
Colchester, Conn. Mr. Kingsbury died at his residence in
New York City, 209 West 123d Street, September 24, 1891, in
the 36th year of his age.

of Ira and Nancy C. (King) Brown, of Wyalusing, Pa.," whose
ancestors on her father's side were a number of them slain
in the Wyoming massacre, July, 1778; and ancestors on her
mother's side, named King, were in the Revolutionary
