Edith Foote, of Brooklyn, N. Y., born July 27, 1866, in To-
ronto, Ontario, daughter of Job and Louise (Prentiss) Foote;
he lived with his grandfather Brown, on his farm at Wya-
lusing, Pa., for a number of years ; he served an apprentice-
ship as machinist with the Towanda Foundry Co., for a year
and a half, then secured a position as machinist with the La
France Fire Engine Co., in Elmira, N. Y.; in 1884 received a
much better position with the Brady Manufacturing Co., of
Brooklyn, N. Y., where he remained until 1889, when he ob-
tained a position with the Edison Phonograph Works, Orange,
N. J.; in 1891 he took a position with the Ashcroft Manufac-
turing Co., Bridgeport, Conn., and remained there ten years;
now Superintendent of the Stanley Instrument Co., Great
Barrington, Mass., and also sole proprietor of the Grant Man-
ufacturing and Machine Co., of Bridgeport; s. p.

1677 Burton Le Ray 8 Kingsbury {Burton 1 , Joseph*, Lem-
uel*, Joseph*, Nathaniel*, Joseph" 1 , Henry'), of Burlington, Kan-
sas; married, July 4, i860, Lucy A. Vince, born September
30, 1841, in Trumbull Co., Ohio, daughter of Alphonse H.
and Eliza C. (Meeker) Vince. He graduated from the
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, N. Y., and was a
civil engineer in different places until he went to Kansas in
the winter of 1856. He preempted the present site of the
City of Burlington in March, 1859 ; held different county
offices until 1875; he was elected Judge of Probate, held the
office eight years ; there have been but three vacancies by
death in that office since the county was organized, and he
filled them all by appointment of three different Governors.
He was a member of the Legislature, and for five years
Regent of the State Agricultural College. He is an attor-
ney-at-law, real estate and pension agent.

1679 Rowena' Kingsbury (Burton 1 , Joseph", Lemuel",
Joseph', Nathaniel*, Joseph 2 , Henry 1 ), married, December 2,
1858, Dr. Emil Fischer, of Philadelphia. He was born June
23, 1832, in Brieg, Silesia, Germany, son of Wilhelm Fred-
rich and Emilie (Henschel) Fischer. His father was a
noted musical director, and was expelled from Prussia for
taking part in the Revolution of 1848. The son received a
classical education while at home, and was a thorough
Greek, French, and Latin scholar. He graduated from the
Jefferson Medical College in 1855, and for some time after-
wards was a resident physician in the Pennsylvania Hospital.
During this period he was also for some years librarian, and
his work in making a catalogue of the large medical library
was greatly valued. He was one of the founders of the
German Hospital, and after its opening spent much time in
assisting in its management. Dr. Fischer was a thorough
musician, and was identified with many musical societies.
He was a member of the College of Physicians, the Academy
of Natural Sciences, the County Medical Society, the Ameri-
can Medical Association, the Pennsylvania State Medical
Society, the Northern Medical Association, and the German
Society. Mrs. Rowena Fischer died in Philadelphia, Feb-
ruary 2, 1887. Dr. Fischer died December 12, 1899.

1704 Gaius Pease" Kingsbury (Solomon O. 1 , Solomon*,
Lemuel 5 , Joseph*, Nathaniel 3 , Joseph 2 , Henry 1 '), of Muskegon,
Mich. He was a student at Albion College in Michigan,
but did not graduate. He was First Sergeant of Company
B, Twenty- first Michigan Infantry, from July, 1862, to
December, 1862. He saw hard marching and fighting in
Kentucky during August and September of 1862. His regi-
ment left Louisville 950 strong, participated in the battle of
Perryville, and reached Nashville with but 350 men. At
Mill Creek, Tenn., he was taken with brain fever. His
father went there and brought him home, and it was over a
year before he recovered his health. He opened the first
telegraph office in Muskegon in October, 1866, and in 1886
became Superintendent of the Electric Light and Electric
Railway Company. He was County Treasurer of Muskegon
County 1885-1887. He married, March 22, 1876, in Muske-

gon, Ella M., daughter of Josiah and Amelia C. (Hannum)
Hopkins, born January 6, 1857, in Paw Paw, Mich. He
died in Muskegon, September 12, 1895. "His chief charac-
teristic was cheerfulness under all circumstances," his widow
writes. She resides in Ann Arbor, Mich.

1711 Doctor Joseph Thomas" Kingsbury {Joseph C.~,
Solomon*, Lemuel*, Joseph*, Nathaniel*, Joseph*, Henry"), of Salt
Lake City; married, August 7, 1879, Jane Mair, born April
5, 1 85 7, in Dundee, Scotland, daughter of James and Mary
(McKay) Mair. He received part of his education in the
University of Deseret, part of it in Cornell University, and
part in nonresident work in the Wesleyan University,
Bloomington, 111. In 1878 he took the position of Instructor
in Chemistry in the University of Deseret, which is now
known as the University of Utah. Two years later he be-
came a full Professor, a greater part of the time Professor
of Chemistry. From 1892 to 1894 he was acting President.
From July 1, 1897, to the present time (1904), President of
the University, and also Professor of Chemistry. During
the early career of the University Dr. Kingsbury taught
most of the subjects of its curriculum. At that time there
were but three instructors in the institution, including- the
President; now there are in all departments forty-three.
For many years the University was only temporarily located:
now through the efforts of Dr. Kingsbury, and others, it is
placed on a beautiful site, overlooking Salt Lake City, Salt
Lake Valley, and the Great Salt Lake. Dr. Kingsbury has
done much work in water analysis ; he has investigated the
question of the presence of gold in the water of Great Salt
Lake, and determined its solubility for silver. He has the
degrees of A.M., Ph.D., Wesleyan, Bloomington, 1892, and
D.Sc. University of Utah, 1894.

during the Civil War, but was not enlisted; graduated from
U. S. Military Academy, West l^oint, 1870. He married,
October 31, 1871, Eva May, daughter of William Edwin and
Emily (Green) Kittredge, born in Waukesha, Wisconsin,
May 11, 1852. In 1889 he was First Lieutenant and Regi-
mental Quartermaster, Second U. S. Cavalry, stationed at
Fort Walla Walla, Washington. At the time of his death,
in June, 1897, he was a Captain in the Second Cavalry, sta-
tioned at Fort Riley, Kansas. His widow now (1903) lives
at the Belvedere, Grand Avenue, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
