of Lieutenant John Carlisle, born July 26, 1727, in York. He
was in the army at the siege of Louisburg, where he lost his
leg. Among old family papers belonging to a descendant
living in an old house in York, is a receipt in French for pay
for the amputation of "Jean Kinsbury's leg," by a French
surgeon at "l'Hopital du Convent." " His wooden leg was a
familiar object in the attic of Grandmother Remick's house
at Birch Hill. He was a man of a good deal of physical and
mental force, and managed to get about and accomplish
much in various ways with his clumsy substitute for the
good leg he had lost in a most honorable cause. He was
one of a committee of seven who reported a set of stalwart
resolutions at a town meeting in the early part of the Revo-
lutionary War." Samuel Came, of York, conveyed to his
grandson, John Ivingsbury, of York, land at a place called

ber 9, 1758; was in the battle of Ticonderoga, July 6, when
Lord Howe was killed, and in the battle July 8, when the
army fought from one o'clock until sunset. He married,
in September, 1766, Rebecca, daughter of John and Marga-
ret (Bryar) Haley, of Kittery; published September 6, 1766.

John 3 , Henry 1 ), of York, married, (1) February 10, 1780, Mary
Raynes, of York ; she died October 5, 1798; (2) August 18,
1799, Eliza Knight, of South Berwick. The news of the
battle of Lexington arrived in York on the evening of April
20th, and on the next day a company of 61 men, under Cap-
tain Johnson Moulton, was recruited, equipped, and marched
across the line into New Hampshire, the first soldiers that
left Maine for the War of Independence. John Kingsbury
was one of that company, and like most of them enlisted
again later. He served as Sergeant in Captain Derby's
company, Colonel Scammon's Regiment, at the siege of
Boston in 1775, also in Captain Abel Moulton's company
in Colonel Titcomb's Regiment, 1777, and in Captain
Brown's company, Colonel Wade's Regiment, 1778. He
lived at " Birch Hill," the place given to his father by his
great-grandfather, " Hon. Capt. Samuel Came, Esq r ." He
died January 21, 1829. His wife died January 19, 1823, aged

cember 8, 1780 ; he was born in York, August 7, 1757, son of
Samuel Shaw ; he served in the Revolution, and was one of
those who enlisted for the defense of Rhode Island in 1777,
as attested by his receipt for £14 "as bounty for serving as
a soldier for Providence." In 1788 he removed to Sanford,
Maine, moving into a log house near Hay Brook. He occu-
pied that for eight years, and then built a one-story house,
subsequently raised another story by his son, Gen. Timothy
Shaw. He was a Lieutenant in the militia in 1800, and a

CHILD.
1 Timothy, born March 19, 1783, in York ; he was a teacher during his
early manhood, and also a surveyor. For a dozen years, or
more, he was engaged in trade at Sanford Corner, and was
also for a time interested in a manufacturing venture. He
kept a tavern from about 1835 to the time of his death. There
was a post in front of the house, on a projecting arm of which
a sign creaked upon its rusty hinges as it swung to and fro in
the passing breeze. The sign was inscribed in gilt letters,
"Sanford Hotel, T. Shaw." For much of the time between
1830 and 1 861 he was Postmaster at the Corner. He was
identified with the Democratic party, and took an active part
in local and state legislation. He was on the Board of Select-
men for 25 years between 1813 and 1S41, town clerk nine
years, on the School Committee two years. Representative six
years, and Senator for two years, 1839-40. For nearly 30

years he was actively connected with the militia, being com-
missioned Captain in 1817, Major in 1822, Lieut. -Colonel in
1827, Colonel, 1S2S, and Brigadier-General in 1S38, serving
until 1846. He married, Nov. 26, 1807, Lucy, dau. of Ephraim
Low, Jr., b. in Sanford, Dec. 20, 1778; d. Jan. 21, 1S41 He d.
Aug. 20, 1870. Ch. : 1 Samuel Madison, b. Nov. 26, 181 1; m.
Susan H. Lord, a resident of Alfred, Me. 2 Timothy, b. Oct.
12, 1817; m. June 14, 1837, Elizabeth, dau. of William Emery.
They started from Sanford on their wedding journey in a two-
wheeled chaise, with their wardrobes packed in a trunk sus-
pended from the axle, and drove to Andover, Mass , the
nearest railway station, to take the train. He was Registrar
of Deeds at Alfred, 1852-185 7; Inspector of Customs, 1859-
1861. In 1865, removed to Biddeford, where he resided until
his death, Dec. 11, 1S92. He was postmaster there, during
Cleveland's first administration. Mrs. Shaw d. Aug. 11, 1899.
