Saunders, the Probate Judge, whose duty it was to preempt
townsites when called upon to do so, refused for some rea-
son or other to preempt the towrisite of Burlington, when
requested to by the town company. In February of that
year Mr. Kingsbury, in company with Col. O. E. Learnard
of Lawrence, and Charles Pearsall, drove to Mr. Saunders'
home on Long Creek, received Mr. Saunders' written resig-
nation, and then drove to Lecompton, the State capital, and
presented the resignation to Governor Medary, who accepted
it. On March 1 following Mr. Kingsbury received his com-
mission as Probate Judge, and on the next day preempted
the present site of the City of Burlington. He made the best
Probate Judge the County has ever had, and his records
were models in their day. He was two years Representa-
tive of Coffey County in the Kansas legislature, and two
years County Clerk. He was an authority on early Coffey
County history, and had a remarkable memory for names
and dates, and wrote the history of Coffee County for the
early atlases._ He was a brilliant writer, and some of his lit-
tle poems written for numerous occasions were catchy and
witty. The campaign songs he wrote in 1892 attracted at-
tention and were sung in all parts of the State. He joined
the Masons before coming to Burlington, and then joined
the local lodge. He was a member of the Church of the
Ascension, although in recent years he has been a believer
in Christian Science." — Burlington, Kansas Independent.

house in Portsmouth when quite young, then he went to
New York, and in 1829 he was in Baracoa, Cuba ; from there
he went to Malaga, Spain, in 1830, and was made head of
the house of his uncle, George G. Barrell, who was a mer-
chant there, and United States Consul. In 1845 he went to
Valparaiso, where his health failed, and he returned to York,
where he died, Jan. 29, 1849.

Chancellor Kingsbury lived in Fair Haven, Conn., from
about 1800 to 1840. He married and had children. One son,
John R. Kingsbury, died in Woodbridge, Conn., Jan. 12,
1892, aged 70. It is not known where Chancellor K. came
from, or to what family he belonged.

family records, belonging to the family of Capt. Daniel
Kingsbury, of Brookfield, Vt, but no one knows about any
relationship : "Polly Kingsbury, died, July 10, 1875, aged 8
years, Daughter of Jedediah Kingsbury, N. H." My
informant could not read name of the place in New Hamp-
shire. All the other entries related to the family of Capt.
Daniel K. Letter of Mrs. D. P. Clarke, Montpelier, Feb. /,

Ezra Kingsley and Anna Kingsbury were married June
18, 1772, in Windham, Conn.; he was b. in Windham, Aug.
13, 1744, son of Ezra and Mary (Follet) Kingsley ; their ch.

KINGSBURY GENEALOGY.
FRANCIS, Argent, a chevron between three eagles displayed, gules.
This is the Francis coat of arms described as impaled -with those of
Bracebridge in the church at Kingsbury, Warwickshire, but there are a
number of variations of this coat, one of which is given in a note on
page 17, as belonging to a Francis family living in Suffolk, very near
Boxford.
This cut is given to show the resemblance between the Francis arms
and those borne on the old coat of arms belonging to Andrew Kingsbury,
Esq., of Hartford, reproduced on page 17.
