In the summer of 1812 he was commissioned as Bri-
gade Major in General E. W. Tupper's brigade of militia
and spent the greater part of the winter near Urbana,
Ohio and later at Fort Meigs, returning home in the spring
of 1813. He then engaged in business at Putnam, Ohio,
where he died February 15, 1859.

Caleb, 7 Benjamin 1 ), born in Campus Martins, Marietta,
Ohio, December 27, 1792. In 1807 he was in a store at
Springfield, and later in a store at Putnam, Ohio. Before
he was twenty-one years old he was a director in a bank
at Zanesville. In 1817 and 1818 he studied law and was
admitted to the bar in Muskingum County. In the fall of
1822 he removed to Gallipolis, Ohio, where he remained
for about a year and then returned to Marietta and resided
there the remainder of his life. He was Cashier and Presi-
dent of the Bank of Marietta and a trustee of Marietta
College. He served as Representative in 1827, 1828 and
1840, and as State Senator in 1831 and 1832.
He served as Prosecuting Attorney of the County from
Hon. Arius Nye

October 30, 1829 to August 17, 1840. In 1847 ne was
chosen Presiding Judge of the district comprising Wash-
ington, Morgan, Athens, Meigs, Gallia and Lawrence
counties. By reason of the arduous labors connected with
the position, his health failed and he resigned in 1850,
continuing the practice of law thereafter. He married (1st)
in 181 5, Rowena Millicent, daughter of Joseph Spencer of
Vienna, Ya. She was a sister to the wife of General Lewis
Cass. She died January 24, 1842. He married (2d) in
Trinity Church, New York, N. Y., May 22, 1847, Caroline
Marie, daughter of Captain Henry and Hannah (Collins)
Sisson, of Newport, R. I. She was born at Warren, R. I.,
April 25, 1814, and was reared in the family of her uncle,

Judge Nye died at Marietta, Ohio, July 2y, 1865. His
widow removed to Brooklyn, N. Y., and died there January
20, 1 901.

2525 Theodore Sedgewick, born October 12, 1854. He
graduated in law from New York University in
1875, am ' was a successful lawyer. He was candi-
date for Congress on the Democratic ticket but de-
feated with the rest of the ticket. He died December
8, 1900.

George, 171 John, 40 Caleb, 7 Benjamin 1 ), born in Campus
Martins, Marietta, Ohio, November 9, 1797. From 1812
to 1824 he was engaged in his father's store. In the latter
year he purchased the Waterford store from his father and
resided in that town a couple of years, continuing to own
the store until 1840. While living at Waterford he was
Justice of the Peace From 1826 to 1847 h'eHvas connected
with the Bank of Marietta, as assistant Cashier, Cashier
and Clerk of the Trustees. He was also a member of the
board of trustees of Marietta College. In 1840 he estab-
lished the Nye hardware store. From 1827 to 1833 he was
County Commissioner. He served as a member of the
city council twelve years; as clerk of the council ten years;
and as Mayor of the city seven years, and for more than
forty years he was a deacon in the Congregational church,

daughter of Jonathan and Sally (Dodge) Cram. She was
born at Hampton Falls, N. H., November 8, 1805 and died
in Marietta, March 6, 1890. He died in Marietta, October
5", 1881.
