XoTK. — 1 iuld lu'i-e the suhstanco of a note, oniitted l)v oversight
ill a more .suitable i)lace, referring to certain interesting earlv sur-
veys of i)ortions of Billeriea.
The Massac-husetts Historical Society has a survey of the town,
whicli was placed in its archives by John Farmer. It was made l)y
.Fonathan Danforth. about IGOO. contains no highwavs or houses,
luit gives streams, and a few of the larger farm lines. This is the
ancient i)lan referred to in the record of Jonathan Danforth, (page
35.) 1 am happy to here to recall the remark there made as to its
disappearance.
Peter K. Vose, Ks(i., of Dennysville, Me., has kindly furnished
me with a survey of Mr. Daniel's farms, (the Church and C'hamp-
ney farms), \vhich came into his hands from the Cooper estate,
Thomas Cooper having been attorney of Mr. Daniel, in the man-
agement and sale of his farms, after his return to England in 16S0.
This survey is of nmch interest, and shows that land speculation is
not modern. I propose to deposit it in the care of the Historical
Society. A good copy will l)e placed in the Bennett Library.
Mr. Merton Simonds, of Bedford, has favored me with the use
of papers from the estate of an uncle, who was a surveyor. Thev
include a chait of Billerica, drawn, as internal evidence shows,
about 17G0, which gives the important minor farm lines in the Billei -
ica portion of that town. This, with Mr. Simonds' approval, will
also be placed iu the care of the Historical Society. And in the of-
fice of the Secretary of State are preserved Danforth's survey of the
Natic^tt grant of 8000 acres to Billerica, and the survey, accomi)an-
ying flic report of the General Court's Committee in 1701, by which
the controversy with Concord and Chelmsford was adjusted. [See
page 82.]
