History of the Study of the Genus
Gelechia.
The earliest observation we find
referring to any of this genus is the
brief notice of Frisch in his " Be-
schreibung von allerlei Insekten in
Deutschland," (published in 1721,)
of the larva of what we now know
as Gelechia ncevifereUa. The same
larva was also noticed by Reaumur in
the 3rd volume of his " Memoires,"
p. 7 (published in 1737). To both
these notices reference has already
been given when treating of Need-
ferclla in the previous volume (vol. ix.
pp. 258, 259). Reaumur has also
noticed in some detail (vol. ii. p.

notice que donne Frisch, dans sa

aujourd'hui la Gelechia naviferella.
Reaumur parle aussi de la m&me

" Memoires," p. 7 (publie en 1737).
Nous avons deja parle de ces deux
observations en traitant de la Nce-

Beide Stellen haben wir im vorigen

GENERAL OBSERVATIONS ON THE GENUS GELECHIA.

486 — 497), the larva which feeds on
grains of barley, the Alucita cerea-
lella of Olivier.

In De Geer's work we only meet
with one notice we can refer to this
genus; this is in his first volume, at
pp. 499, 500, where we have a de-
scription of the insect to which Linne
soon after gave the name of Dode-
cella. De Geer, in noticing the
structure of the palpi, says, " on
peut les nommer des barbes en comes
recourbees" and may thus seem to
have given the first intimation of the
Haworthian genus Recurvaria. The
larva of Dodecella appears to occur
along with that of Tortrix Buoliana
in the shoots of Pinus syhestris t and
it is very possible that the larva de-
scribed by De Geer (p. 499) belongs
to the latter species. Many, like
myself, have bred Dodecella from
fir-shoots, but without having seen
or noticed the larva, which is pro-
bably paler, more slender and more
active than that of the accompanying
Tortrix.

Linne appears to have known at
least five species of the genus, viz. :
Populella, Leucatella, Cinerella, Dode-
cella and Gemmella (Nos. 1442, 1444,
1445, 1421, and 1388 of his " Fauna
Suecica " respectively) : one of these,
Leucatella, is recognisably figured
in Clerck's u Icones Insectorum
rariorum."

Scopoli, in his " Entomologia Car-
niolica," has described one of the
T<zniolella group, under the name of
Vorticella, assigning as his reason for
the name, "quia sedens, circa idem
punctum, sese in circulum saepe

de plus raconte avec quelques details
(vol. ii. p. 486—497) Phistoire de
la chenille qui vit dans l'interieur
des graines d'orge, Y Alucita cerealella
d'Olivier.

Dans l'ouvrage de De Geer nous
ne trouvons qu'une seule notice que
nous pouvons rapporter a ce genre ;
e'est dans le premier volume, pp. 499,
500, ou il y a une description de
l'insecte auquel Linne a plus tard
donne le nom de Dodecella. De
Geer, en parlant de la structure des
palpes, ditqu'" on peut les nommer des
barbes en comes recourbees," et parait
ainsi avoir donne la premiere idee du
genre Haworthien Recurvaria. La
chenille de la Dodecella parait se
trouver en compagnie de la chenille
de la Tortrix Buoliana dans lespousses
du Pinus sylvestris, et il est assez
possible que la chenille decrite par
De Geer, p. 499, appartienne a la
Tordeuse. Plusieurs entomologistes

Populella, Leucatella, Cinerella, Dode-
cella et Gemmella (les Nos. 1442,
1444, 1445, 1421 et 1388 de la
" Fauna Suecica") ; une espece (la
Leucatella) est assez bien figuree par
Clerck dans ses " Icones Insectorum
rariorum."

Scopoli dans son " Entomologia
Carniolica," a decrit une du groupe
de Tceniolella, sous le nom de Vorti-
cella, qu'illui a donne, "quia sedens,
circa idem punctum, sese in circulum
saepe gyrat ;" sous le nom de Scalella

cler Alucita cerealella Olivier's.

In Degeer's Werk findet sich bloss
cine Notiz, die unsere vorliegende
Gattung angeht. Sie steht im ersten
Bande, S. 499, 500, wo die Schabe
beschrieben ist, die Linne spater Do-
decella nannte. Indem Degeer den
Bau der Taster beschreibt, sagt er,
" Man konnte sie hornerformig zu-
rilckgebogene Taster nennen," und
scbeint so gewissermassen die erste
Andeutung der Haworthischen Gat-
tung Recurvaria zu geben. OfFenbar
kommt die Raupe der Dodecella in
Gesellschaft der Raupe von Tortrix
Ruoliana in den Trieben der Kiefer
(Pinus syhestris) vor, und es ist sehr
moglich, dass die von Degeer S.
499 beschriebene Raupe zu der
letztern Art gehort. Ich und Andere
haben den Schmetterling von Dode-
cella aus Kiefertrieben erhalten, ohne
dass wir die Raupe sahen oder er-
kannten ; wahrscheinlich ist sie heller,
scblanker und lebbafter als ihre Ge-
sellschafterin, die von Buoliana.

Linne hat mindestens fiinf Arten
unserer Gattung beschrieben, nam-
lich Populella, Leucatella, CinereUa, Do-
decella and Gemmella (in der " Fauna
Suecica" unter den Nummern 1442,
1444, 1445, 1421 und 1388); eine
ertragliche Abbildung von einer
derselben Leucatella, zeigen Clerck's
N Icones Insectorum rariorum."

Scopoli hat in seiner " Entomologia
Carniolica" eine Art der Tceniolella-
gruppe unter dem Namen Vorticella
aufgefuhrt, den er wahlte " weil das
Insect im Sitzen sich oft um einen
Punkt im Kreise herutndreht." Als

copiosius de larva disseruit, quam,
quod hordei grana exedit, Olivier
postea Alucita cerealellam vocavit.

In opere Degeeriano unum modo
locum invenimus ad Gelechias perti-
nentem. Nam in vol. i. p. 499 et
500 illud insectum descripsit, cui a
Linnaeo nomen Phalcence dodecellce
impositum est. Existimare licet a
viro egregio, quum palpos comme-
moraret dici posse " palpos in cor-
nicula recurvata productos " (barbes
en cornes recourbees), primariam
notam generis Haworthiani Recurva-
rim esse indicatam. Dodecellce larva
una cum Tortr. Buoliance larva in
Pint sylvestris turionibus videtur
habitare ; credibile est igitur lar-
vam, quam Degeer p. 499 describit,
pertinere ad Buolianam. Ego saltern
et alii ex Pini sylvestris summis
ramulis Dodecellas prodire vidimus ;
sed earum larvas non cognovimus
nee aliud suspicari licet nisi palli-
diores eas esse et tenuiores magisque
agiles quam Tortricis larvam, cum
qud habitant.

Linnaeus haud dubie quinqueGe/e-

in " Iconibus Insectorum rariorum"
ita pinxit, ut de ea ambigere nemo
possit.

gyrat ;" and also, under the name of
Scalella, the insect which has been
so long known to us under the later
Fahrician name of Aleella (Zeller,
" Stettin. Ent. Zeit. 1855," p. 254).

The authors of the " Systematisches
Verzeichniss der Schmetterlinge der
Wienergegend" appear to have been
acquainted with several of this genus,
in addition to three of those described
by Linne* (whose Pupulella they have
under the name of Tremella), and
Denisella, Rhombella, Vulgella, Ter-
rella, Micella, Tripunctella, Dimidiella
and Ligulella are placed by them
amongst the Phalcence Tinece recur-
vipalpes after the Depressarice (see
vol. vi. of this work, pp. 26, 27),
though separated from them by se-
veral of the Phycidece. Ferrugella is
placed away from the others amongst
the Phalcence Tinece impalpes. I have
not been able to adopt the Tinea
Turpella (p. 139, No. 29) as the
oldest designation of Gelechia pingui-
nella; the diagnosis, " dull and pale
grey mixed moth," not seeming suffi-
ciently distinctive to enable the
species to be identified.

Fabricius, who in his " Systema
Entomologiae" had only introduced
two of the Linnaean species, described
in his "Species Insectorum" one
new species under the name of Tinea
Hermannella, and in his " Ento-
mologia Systematica" we have four
more species described : Quadrella,
No. 51, p. 298; Viduella, No. 53,
p. 299 ; Lugubrella, No. 54, p. 299,
and Aleella, No. 136, p. 317 (already
described by Scopoli under the name
Scalella).

Schrank, in his " Fauna Boica,"

il a decrit l'espece que nous avons si
long-temps connue sous le nom plus
jeune, Aleella de Fabricius (Zeller,
Stettin. Ent. Zeitung, 1855, p. 254).

Les auteurs du u Systematisches
Verzeichniss der Schmetterlinge der
Wienergegend" paraissent avoir
connu plusieurs especes de ce genre,
outre trois de celles decrites par
Linne (dont la Populella est donnee
sous le nom de Tremella), et les
Denisella, Rhombella, Vulgella, Ter-
rella, Micella, Tripunctella, Dimidiella
et Ligulella se trouvent placees parmi
les " Phalcence Tinece recurvipalpes"
apres les Deprcssaria (voyez le six-
ieme volume de cet ouvrage, pp. 26,
27), quoique separees d'elles par
plusieurs especes de Phycidece. La
Ferrugella est placee loin des autres
parmi les " Phalcence Tinece im-
palpes." Je n'ai pu adopter la Tinea
Turpella (p. 139, No. 29) comme la
designation la plus ancienne pour la
Gelechia pinguinella, parceque le
diagnose u phalene obscure et melee
de gris pale," ne me parait pas suf-
fisante pour servir a reconnaitre
l'espece.

Fabricius, qui dans son " Systema
Entomologiae" n'avait introduit que
deux des especes de Linne, a decrit
dans ses M Species Insectorum" une
espece nouvelle sous le nom de Tinea
Hermannella, et dans son u Entomolo-
gia Systematica" ajoute encore quatre
especes decrites : la Quadrella, No.
51, p. 298 ; la Viduella, No. 53, p.
299 ; la Lugubrella, No. 54, p. 299,
et X Aleella, No. 136, p. 317, que
Scopoli avait deja decrite sous le
nom de Scalella.

Phalcence Tinece recurvipalpes auf,

gehorigen Arten (s. Band VI. des
vorliegenden Werkes S. 26, 27),

von denselben getrennt. Ferrugella

Tinece impalpes. Ihren Namen Tinea
Turpella (S. 139, No. 29) anzunehmen
babe ich mich nicht entschliessen
konnen, weil die Diagnose : " Duster
und blassgrau gemischte Schabe"
doch zu wenig geeignet ist, urn
unsere Gelechia pinguinella kenntlich
zu machen.

Fabricius, der nur zwei der
Linnaeischen Arten in sein "Systema
Entomologiae" aufgenommen hatte,
beschrieb in den " Species Insec-
torum" eine neue als Tinea Herman-
nclla und in der M Entomologia Sys-
tematica" noch vier andre: Quad-
rella, S. 298 No. 51, Viduella, S. 299
No. 53, Lugubrella, S. 299 No. 54,
und Aleella (die identisch mit Scalella,
Scop, ist) S. 317 No. 136.

Fabricius postquam in " Systema
Entomologiae " duas tantum earum
specierum, quas Linnaeus habet, re-
cepit, in recentiore libro, cujus titulus

novam adjecit, quae est Tinea Her-
