INTRODUCTION

THE Huguenot Society of America presents in this volume
the first catalogue of its books, pamphlets and manuscripts,
which have been collected during its brief corporate existence
of five years, with the view of establishing in New York a
special library of the history and literature of the Huguenots.

These various works now classified and catalogued form the
basis of what is hoped and expected to become in course of
years the best and most complete library of its kind in the
civilized world. It is shelved in the elegant fire-proof build-
ing of the library of Columbia College, in the city of New
York, where it is accessible at all times for study and reference.
Thus far the treasures have been largely presents from the
founders of the Society and their friends, although a considera-
ble number of the most rare and valuable tomes in the collec-
tion have been secured by purchase. The acknowledgment
of the gifts has been attempted in the pages of this catalogue,
and has been rendered complete so far as the data can be dis-
covered in the early records of the collection. Any omissions
of which the Library Committee are advised will be corrected
in the next edition of the catalogue. Henceforward all entries

viii INTRODUCTION

of additions to the library will be made in the Accession Book
with precision, and each new volume will be numbered and
placed in its proper class upon the shelves.

The classification of the collection has been conducted with
special reference to the needs and convenience of the readers
and investigators who are seeking information concerning the
Huguenots, their emigrations and various settlements, and
their extraordinary influence upon the commerce and the re-
ligious and social life of the countries which afforded them a
refuge from religious persecution. When time is precious it
is desirable that a particular book, or books on a particular
subject, may be obtained in the quickest as well as the easiest
manner. While this library is necessarily a special collection,
many of the books bear indirectly on Huguenot history, and
are thus rendered more useful and accessible if placed in a
class quite distinct from Huguenot literature.

Under each class the books are arranged alphabetically by
the author's name, with the exception of individual biography
and genealogy. Anonymous books, if the author is unknown,
are entered under the title. No attempt has been made to
classify the pamphlets, which are arranged alphabetically by
the author's name. The author index represents the entire
library, including books, pamphlets and manuscripts.

The number at the right of each entry in the catalogue
corresponds to the number gilded on the back of the book.
To send for a particular book it is necessary to use this num-
ber only. The scheme of classification is given as follows,
with the number of volumes at the present time in each
class :

The object of the Huguenot Society of America as expressed
in its constitution "to perpetuate the memory and to foster
and promote the principles and virtues of the Huguenots,"
also, " to cause to be prepared and published, when the requi-
site materials have been discovered and procured, a memorial
history of the Huguenots in America, wherein shall be par-
ticularly set forth the part belonging to that element in the
growth and development of American character, institutions
and progress " has been actively pursued with most gratifying
results. It is well known that the history of these Huguenot
people is replete with phases and facts of the most interesting

X INTRODUCTION

character. It is neither dull nor dry when properly handled.
Its scope is almost limitless in variety. It touches, in its
course through decades and centuries, not only religion, poli-
tics, invention, the arts and sciences, statesmanship and fami-
lies, but it embraces nearly every branch of learning known
to the province of letters. It is colored with romance ; it is
rich in acts of heroism ; it is picturesque in its side lights.
Every descendant of the Huguenots in this country has doubt-
less some tradition, document, or fragmentary record ; and,
while these alone may seem of little worth, when brought into
connection with others they may prove important links in the
chain of priceless information. It is fully expected that every
Huguenot family in America, from the Atlantic to the Pacific,
will sooner or later be represented in the membership of this
Society by some of its representative descendants, and it is
desirable that every one should awaken to the importance of
aiding in the discovery and preservation of family records,
church records, genealogical tables, public documents, entries
in ancient Bibles, prayer-books, and Huguenot publications,
manuscripts, autographs, and personal memoranda, as far as
practicable.

The library is open daily from eight o'clock A.M. to ten
o'clock P.M.
