iHt HISTORY OF THE WORSHIP-
FUL COMPANY OF BLACKSMITHS
from Early Times until the Year 1647.
Compiled by Arthur Adams. For
Private Circulation. ^i,

By means of an interesting selection from the
records and an excellent running commentary
Mr. Adams has told the history of the Com-
pany of Blacksmiths (who in the previous cen-
tury had been the Tooth-drawers) for 1 50 years
from the reign of Henry VII to the civil war.
He starts with an inventory of the hall which
they took on lease in 1495. It was well though
not elaborately fitted out, and th:re was little
silver plate. The Blacksmiths, in fact, were
one of the smaller, though not one of the
smallest. City Companies, as is shown by the
comparative sums paid when the Kmg wanted
money from the city; Where the Drapers paid
£420 and the Coppersmiths twenty shillings,
the Blacksmiths' share was £8.

Much of the record has to do with eating and
drinking. When the Company met in prayer
for the souls of the dead it consumed three
dozen white buns and six dozen spiced. At
the beginning of the sixteenth century, Mr.
Adams finds it well disciplined and frugal. By
the middle it was living beyond its income,
and the accounts seem to suggest that too much
eating and drinking was the cause. With the
reign of Queen Mary, visits to inns and ale
houses are less frequently recorded. The
records of the reign of Queen Elizabeth are
unfortunately nearly all lost, but with the
beginning of the seventeenth century Mr.
Adams finds signs of better education. The
wardens are able to sign documents instead of
making their mark. E\en more interesting in
this century is the large number of boys coming
to London from all over England and Wales to
be bound apprentice to the Blacksmiths. There
is also some interesting light on the comparative
value of labour. At the beginning of thecentury
the clerk to the church recei\ed a salarv of
four shillings a year. The beadle for punishing
a disobedient apprentice was paid sevenpence. j
