^TR.ADBROOK is a parish in Iheliiiiulied of Hoxne
— tlie aiaiket town, a small one, is 96 miles n.e. (rom
London, 9 n. from Fiamliiigham, between 6 ;ind 7 E.
ffom Eye, 24 n. ffotii Ipswicii, 28 s. from Norwich,
and 7 s. from Harle>ton ; situated witliin ahont fonr
miles of tiie northfiii bolder of the county aiinttinn
upon Suffolk. Theie are no mannfactuies belonging
to the place, and the littlf tra'le it enjovs is entirely of
a local nature. Petty ses.sions aie held here every
alternate 'rue»^dfy; and it is a polling station at the
election of meinbeis to represent East SuffolU.

The pi ices of worship are the parish church of All
Saints, and a liapti-t chapel : the living is a discharged
vica'age, in the patronage of the Bishop of Ely; the
present incunilient is the Rev. John Taylor Alien, m.a.
The chaiities connected with this |)lace are the Ho.x'iie
Union workhouse, and some funds of small amount
by means of which a few children are educated and
apprenticed. Robert Copley, the learned and pious



Bishop of Lincoln, who died in 1253 was born here.
He made himself so obnoxious by bis opposition to
the ineasuies of Pope Innocent IV., tiiat bis Holiness
endeavoured to get hishody exhumed, for the purpose
of being burnt. Stradbrook confers the title of Earl
upon the family of Rons. The market is held o;i Tues-
day, and a fair on the third Monday in June, also a
statute for hiring strvatits on the 2nd October. The
population of the parish, in 18'M, was 1,527, and ia
1841, 1,637.

HoHHAM is a parish in the same hundred as Strad-
brook — the village, a small and ruial one, is 2 miles
s.w. from that town, on the road to Eye, from v\hicl)
it is lietween four and five miles distant. The places of
worship are the paiish church of Saint Mary and a
Baptist chapil. The living of Horliam is a lectory in
the gift of the Rev William Ma
