HADDENHAM and LONG CRENDON.



lADDENHAM isa pirish, in the linndrKl of Ayles-
bury— the villaue, a ro 'Siderahleotii*, issiiunted about
a mile and a half off the iiiaii; road fioni Aylesbuiy to
Tiianie. about 7 miles s.vv. from the foi nier town, and
2 and 3 N.E. from the latter. The houses cotiipohiiii!
the village are irregular and strangling, Hiid for the
most part built of nmd and roofed with thatci). The
females are chiefly employed in lace-milking, and the
males in Hgiicultnie. Tlie ptri^h cimich of Saint
Mary is a very re>peciable looking huildine: tlie li\ing
is a vicarnee, in the presentation of the Dean and
Chapter of Korhester ; the Kev. John Willis is the
pre>eut incun)beiit. There isa chapel each for Bap-
tists and Wesleyan Methodists. The parish, by the



government returns, contained, in 1831, 1,477 inhabit
tants, and in 1841, 1,545.

Long Crendon paiishisin the hundred of Ashen-
ive laanufrtcture
of needles— the which was still more pn)>perous in
time of war. Besiaes the needle branch, the making
of lace employs some of the femnles here. The parish
church ef Saint Mary is rather a spat iou>> structure,
with a tower rising from the cenne : the livim: is a
perpetual curacy, in the gift i^f the Duke cf Marl-
burough. Popniation of the parish in IS^il, 1,382, and
in 1841, 1,656.
