for infants, and almshouses — the latter endowed by
Misses Smith (two benevolent ladies of the society of
fiiends) for twelve single women or widows. Olney
is signalized as having had, for its vicars and curates,
woithies of the higliest literary attainment*, the
majority of whom have been authors of valuable pious
works. Cowper the poet, too, inlialed tiie literary
atmosphere of Olney, fiom whence he removed to
Wcston-Underwood in 1786; and the house, with its
garden in the rear, and his favourite seat, is still shewn
to the inquiring and classic stranger. The maiket,
formeily held on Monday, has been changed to
Thursday, and is well attended as a coin niait. Fairs
on Easter Monday, June 2yth, called 'cherry fair,'
and October 13ib. The parish contained, in 1831,
2,344 inhabitants, and in 1841, 2,4.S7.

About a mile and a half s.w. from Olney i.s the
pretty little village of We.ston-Underwoou. 'I'his is
the ancient scat of ihe Throckmortons (a Caiholic
family): iheii descendant. Sir Rohcit (ieorge Throck-
mmton (who is loid of the manor) lla^ fitted up a tteat
Uoman Catholic chapel, and eiedet' a hand>^ome resi-
lience fir the piitst; a good school ix alsn maintiined
in ihe village, by ihe same bciievnlcnt family. Weston
was the lesidence of the i)oet Cowper before men-
tioned, for several years during the latter pait of his
life, and the vicinity of the xillage is supposed to have
furnished many of his beautiful dcscripiions ofruial
scenery. Population of the parish, in 1841, 438.
