sidi'rable antiquity, consists chiefly of a long street,

of the Romans, close to the Ouse, which river here
forms the boundary of ihe counties of Buckingham
and Northampton. The paiislies are in two manors :
the west side being in that of Calverton, the property
of the faniilv of Lowndes ; the east side in Wolver-
toii manor, belonging to the trustees of the Ratcliffe
charity. The government of the town is in the resident
anil couniy magistrates, assisted by tliefiflirers ajipoin-
ted at the nianuriHl couits. 'I'he Newport Pagnell
circuit of County Court towns, includes Stony-Strat-
ford in the court for the recoveiy of debts to any
amount not exceeding £20, the court is held monthly at
Newport. The manufacture of lace, before the intro-
duction of machinery, was thestaplebete, and furnished
numerous ituhistrious females with profitahle em-
ployment ; this branch, however, lias all luit become
