This castle was the jointure, and l>ecame the retire-

the beginning of tbe twelfth century. The inhabitants
are chiefly employed in agriculture; some of the

nobleman is lord of the manor, and his representative
holds a court leet and baton, at which a constable is
appointed. The fiist Earl of Manchester was a native
of this place, and a parliatneiitary geneial in ilie civil
war.

The parisli chuidi of Saint Andrew is a ])andsonie
building, with a lofty spire: the livinu is a vicarage, in
the arcbdeaconry of Huntingdon, in the presentat'i. n
