The University and Its Campus

Rice University, founded as the William Marsh Rice Institute in 1891, has
been dedicated from the beginning to "the advancement of Letters, Science,
and Art." In the years since the institute first opened its doors to students in 1912,
Rice has established itself as one of the most selective undergraduate and grad-
uate universities in the United States. Through a faculty of 325, Rice University
now offers a broad program of basic studies and research in the humanities, sci-
ences, social sciences, architecture, and engineering, to some 2700 undergrad-
uate men and women. Its graduate programs provide specialized training to over
800 students in areas of advanced research.

Located near the heart of metropolitan Houston, the university occupies
a tree-lined campus of more than 300 acres. Its physical resources include eight
residential colleges for undergraduates, numerous classroom buildings and lab-
oratories, the 875,000-volume Fondren Library, the Media Center, and the Insti-
tute for Computer Sciences and Applications. Joint classes and research projects
are held with many of the institutions in the nearby Texas Medical Center and
with other universities.

The majority of undergraduate students live on campus in the residential
colleges. Modeled after the colleges of Oxford and Cambridge, the residential
colleges at Rice provide a focus for the undergraduate experience. Each college
has a separate student government; it plans social functions, fields intramural
teams, and sponsors innovative academic courses, visiting distinguished speakers,
plays, and other functions. Each college has a faculty master whose family home
adjoins the college. Other resident faculty members and approximately eighteen
non-resident faculty associates act as advisers and mentors to the students in each
college. At present two of the residential colleges house both men and women,
two are for women only, and the other four are for men.

Graduate life centers in the library, the laboratories, and the graduate
lounges. Graduate students live off campus, but the Graduate Student Association
organizes and funds regular social functions and provides graduate students with
a separate organization that represents their interests within the university.
