iron. A raft was constructed on the river
at Cruces and the anchors were hauled on
sledges by block and tackle to the bank,
where they were loaded upon the rafts and
floated to Gamboa. There a crane lifted
them to a flat car and they were taken to
the ship.

Activities of the Young Men's Christian Asso-
ciation.



The indoor baseball team will play the Gorgona team
at Corozal on Saturday night, April 29.

The Corozal pennants have arrived and may be
purchased at the office.

An informal social will be held on Thursday evening.

CULEBRA.

In the bowling match on Saturday, April 22, the Cule-
bra team was defeated by the Gatun team by a score of
2 to 1.

Following are the latest moves of the wireless chess
game between Porto Bello and Culebra:

On Tuesday evening, April 24, W. A. Reece gave an
illustrated lecture to Culebra men on ' "Things Electri-

program is expected.

EMPIRE.

Empire's new bowling alleys were opened on Satur-
day evening, April 22. A large crowd was present to
see Mr. Warwick throw the first ball. A local orchestra
of mandolins and banjos provided music foi the occasion.
The first strike was made by T. L. Clear, and nigh
score of 208 by J. A. Parkis.

Empire defeated Corozal at indoor baseball on April
22, by a score of 20 to 14. The batteries for Empire
were Young and Mullane, and for Corozal, Ritter and
Cunningham.

The following high scores in duckpins were made
during the week ending April 22: W. G. Brown, 104;
Giavelli, 104; Lippert, 103; Parkis, 113; Huson, 109,
101; Potter. 109, 100; P. F. Brown. 101; Pinney, 117
102: Rodeghiere, 100. High scores in tenpins were
as follows: Peterson, 213, 209; Danielson, 202, 200;
Parkis. 205, 208; P. F. Brown, 211, 202.

The March statistical report shows that Empire
clubhouse had 400 members, a percentage according
to population of 70, that over 2.000 games were bowled,
and that over 6,000 games of pool were played.

The literary society on Monday evening, April 24,
discussed the problem of "Handling men."

The Gatun ducKpin team will play at Empire on
Saturday evening April 29. This will be the first tour-
nament game on the new alleys.

GORGONA.



Rates Established in The Canal Zone and Panama
Ancon, C. Z., April 20, 1911.

By virtue of the authority conferred on me by an
ordinance enacted by the Isthmian Canal Commission
on August 25. 1910 and approved by the Secretary of
War on December 3, 1910, I hereby establish and pro-
mulgate, to be effective on and after May 4, 1911, the
rates and charges hereinafter set forth which may be
made and collected by persons engaged in the trans-
portation of passengers for hire over the streets and
roads of the Canal Zone by means of carriages, surreys,
wagons, carts, coaches, cabs, or other conveyances drawn
by horses or mules.

Any person who shall charge and receive for the
transportation of any person over the streets or roads
of the Canal Zone in any of the aforesaid conveyances,
any sum in excess of any rate herein prescribed, or any
person who shall receive for himself or others such trans-
portation in the Canal Zone, and who fails or refuses
to pay therefor the rate or rates herein prescribed t
shall be held to be guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon
conviction, shall be fined for each offense a sum not
exceeding Twenty-five Dollars (Sections 4 and 5 of
Ordinances.) A rate different from that herein pre-
scribed may, however, be charged and paid if the parties
to the transaction agree thereon; but if there be any
dispute as to such agreement the duly prescribed rate
shall prevail (Section 4). Where the rates are indicated
to cover transportation of persons betweeen Zone
points and points in Panamanian territory, they are
the same that have been duly established and promul-
gated by Panamanian authority for the like service; the
rates to cover such transportation having been agreed
on by such Panamaian authority and myself, thus
providing harmony of coach tariffs; and, except under

third straight victory for Gorgona since the opening
of the league.

"Should prohibition be universal in the United
States" was the topic for discussion last Wednesaday
S. C. Murray led the discussion.

Ten boys have passed their tests for second class
scout badges, and are now preparing themselves for
the first class test.

GATUN.

On April 17, the orchestra from the Hamburg-Amer-
ican liner Prim August W'Uhelm gave a recital. The
orchestra will be engaged for another concert in the
near future.

Gatun lost three games of duckpins to Culebra on
the local alleys on Saturday evening, April 22.

Instead of the debate scheduled for the literary club
on Wednesday evening, April 19, Franklin Matthews
gave a talk on "Incidents in the lifeof a correspondent."
Mr. Ross of Empire and Mrs. Ludwig of Gatun sang
several solos during the evening.

The 100, or over, duckpin scores for the week ending
April 22 are as follows: DePoorter, 122. 101, 105;
H. S. Adams, 100; Wells, 106, 101; Green, 100, 105,

Culebra defeated Cristobal in indoor baseball on
Saturday night by the score of 12 to 10. The batteries
were: Culebra — Tupper and Cushing; Cristobal —
Russell and McSparren.

A debating and discussion club was organized on
Wednesday night and the following committee was
appointed to draw up a constitution: Messrs. Ware,
Yeiser, and Richards. Messis. Weaver, Moyei, Ware
and Yeiser were appointed to conduct the first debate
on the following subject "Resolved that the resignation
of President Diaz of Mexico would be for the better-
ment of that country." Debates will be held every
Wednesday night.

The failure of any coachman to keep a copy of this
tariff displayed in his coach constitutes a violation of
tiie aforesaid ordinance.

Except when duly licensed in the Republic of Panama,
on each conveyance aforesaid employed in the trans-
portation of passengers for hire, there shall be paid to
the Canal Zone Government a license tax of $1.25
(United States Currency) a month (Par. "A,"Section 7 ,
of the "Regulations Providing for Certain Taxes and
licenses in the Canal Zone other than for the Sale of
IntoxicatingLiquors/'effectiveJuly 1, 1908, as amended
by ordinance enacted August 25, 1910, and approved by
the Acting £ -■ retary of War. October 31, 1910.)

All coaches and like conveyances on Zone streets
and roads should carry lights between the hours of
p. m. and 5a.m., and should also be provided with
bells or horns.

Coachmen should secure copies of this tariff from the
Head of the Departme it of Civil Administration, Ancon,
Canal Zone.

(Note A.^ The rites herein indicated are in Panama-
nian (silver) money. The rates in United States
cuirency are one-half of those shown in this tariff.

(Note B.) The term "east of Episcopal chapel"
means east of a north and south line drawn through the
entrance to the chapel.

(Note C.) One stop, not exceeding five (5) minutes,
in transit between two points will be allowed without
the i aymer.t of extra fare.

(Note D.) Between 1 1 p. m. and 6 a. m. the rates
an: increased fifty (50) per cent.

Lease of Lots in Colon.

Sealed bids will be received up to 5.30 p. m.. Wednes-
day, May 31, 1911 for lease to the highest bidder of
lots in the newly filled section of Colon as shown on
plans which may be seen at the Land Office in Colon and
at the Land Office in Panama.

These sealed bids must be addressed to the General
Superintendent of the Prnama Railroad Company,
Colon, and must be plainly marked on the outside of the
envelope "Proposal for lot No. , block No. ,



Colon." Bids not marked in this manner will not be
considered.

The minimum rental to be accepted for these lots
may be ascertained by applying to either one of the
above mentioned Land Offices.

Persons holding options on any lots in this district
and having paid rental up to June 30, 1910. will have
the privilege of taking the lot at the highest rate offered.

The lots to be leased are those on the west side of E
street between 2d street*and 14th street, and that dis-



trict on the east side of E street bounded by 2d street
on the north, 9th street on the south, E street on the
west and G street on the east.

Those lots on the west side of E street will be avail-
able for building on orabout June 1, 1911; the balance
of the lots will not be available for ouilding before Octo-
ber 1, 1911.

Parties submitting bids must state character and
purpose of building they intend to erect, and must
indicate period of time in which they expect to commence
construction after assignment.

Application blanks may be obtained at the Land
Office in Colon and Panama.

All rental is to be paid quarterly in advance.

The Panama Railroad Company reserves the right to
reject any or all bids.
