PUBLISHERS' ANNOUNCEMENT.

" Notable St. Louisans in 1900' needs little or no
introduction or preface. It presents the portraits of 1,096
representative men of the fourth city of the United States. No
work of this character can be absolutely complete, and in sev-
eral cases names are unavoidably omitted owing to the impos-
sibility of securing portraits, although the date of publication
was delayed to obviate this as far as practicable. But between
the covers of this volume will be found pictures of men who
have distinguished themselves in all the leading professions as
well as in manufacturing, wholesaling, jobbing and retailing.

Below each name will be found a brief title or description.
For purposes of uniformity these titles are limited to two lines,
and an effort has been made to select such descriptions as are
most up-to-date and distinctive. To have enumerated every
past and present office of some of those whose pictures are given
would have required nearly a page of space, and would have
changed the work from a portrait gallery to a collection of
biographies.

An alphabetical index of portraits is appended. In the
body of the work the classification is as accurate and complete
as it was possible to make it, but in a city of aggressiveness
and public spirit, in which the leading men rally round every
movement for the common good, and where exclusiveness is the
exception rather than the rule, no plan of classification by
trades or professions can be invariably followed.

The portraits are uniformly good. More than 1,000 of
them are from photographs taken expressly for this work by
Mr. J. C. Strauss, who made a special sitting of each subject
with but few exceptions. The half-tone engravings are by the
Sanders Engraving Company of St. Louis, and the Columbia
Engraving and Electrotype Company of Chicago.

The publishers are indebted to Mr. Joseph H. Barr and
Mr. Joseph B. Widen, of Barr & Widen Mercantile Agency

tion «•! names appeal ing herein.

Tin- • hical and press work by the Woodward &

man Printing Company will receive universal commendation.
The binding is by the Becktold Printing and Book Manufacturing
Company.

"Notabli St. I.' 'i [Sans [N 1900" will be preserved as a
work "i reference for generations to come. Never before has
-n complete a work of reference of its kind been published in
Si Louis, and it will be in almost daily use in newspaper offices
and libraries, as well as in the homes of subscribers. As a
portrait album a rt from its value as a work of reference,

it is unique. Many of those who examine it will find accurate
and artistic portraits of at least five hundred of their personal
friends and acquaintances. To make such a collection in the
ordinal 5 would involve weeks of labor and a large outlay

ot mom

No in. .ic appropriate year for tin- publication could have
been selected. Tin- last quarter of the century which is now in
it-< closing year has seen St. Louis grow into a great metropolitan
city. ' 'nc after another Eastern rivals have been outdistanced
both in population and manufactures. St. Louis has maintained
its reputation foi conservatism and financial solidity, and to
these bulwarks of prosperity it has added aggressiveness and
enterprise. The year 1900 finds it in the front rank as a com-
mercial and financial center, and as a distributing point for
goods of its own manufacture as well as for the pick of the
ui.i Id 's markets.

When tin- Static carved out of the Territory purchased by
Thomas Jefferson decided to celebrate, by a World's Fair, the
centennial of an event, aptly described ;is second only in impor-
tance to the signing ot tin- Declaration of Independence, St.
Louis was their unanimous choice tor tin- site of the Exposition.
In 1903 every civilized nation will be represented here, and to
the visitors thus assembled as well as to those who entertain
them, this work will be a source of interest as well as instruc-
tion.
