This "Property of the City of New York" (Read: 110 Livingston) schoolbook is a version of the old tale with the "tedious sermonizing" taken out. While that may be more appropriate for a public school, it makes it lose alot of the original "flavor" they claim to preserve, but which is really best seen in other versions. The illustrations are, however, very good, especially the one of the treehouse, which is not always easy to visualize.

Subject: Appreciative, but with reservations...

I associate myself with the prior comments; This was the first book I remember reading, and I had forgotten how prayerful it was - probably because prayer was part of my family's life. Now that I have matured past that superstition, I appreciate the sanitized version, which lets the modern - but still impressionable - young reader enjoy the adventure without the original's frequent interruption by dated religious references. I do miss, however, some of the flavor of the original's language, and the introductory sections at least, seem to omit more than is necessary in accomplishing the intention of modernizing and dropping duplicative material. Had I the time, here at the other end of my time, I would consider the editorship of a rewrite with these concerns in mind - not to mention inventing a few daughters to share the adventure and broaden the appeal.
