PELATIAH, of Springfield, Mass., carpenter and builder, (son of Reu-
ben Bliss and Elizabeth Hitchcock, of S.,) was born May 5, 1770, and mar-
ried Nov. 13, 1794, to Mary, daughter oi Thomas Stebbins. She was born
Feb. 2, 1771, and died Aug. 7, 1833. He died July 21, 1826. Issue :

1888. Zeryiah, b. July 24, 1796, d. Aug. 7, 1812,— sometimes recorded as " Deniab."

1889. Joannah, b. Jan. 29, 1799, d. March 23, 1800.

Hon. WILLIAM BLOWERS, of Halifax, N. S., (son of Hon. Jonathan
Bliss and Mary Worthington, of St. John and Fredericton, N. B.,) was b.
Aug. 28, 1795, — was at one time an influential member of the Nova Scotia
Legislature, and afterwards became Chief Justice of the Province. He was
married to a daughter of Chief Justice S. S. Blowers, (see p. 75,) of Nova
Scotia, and had issue :

1890. Mary, m. Jan. 4, 1855, Rt. Rev. Hibbert Binney, D. D., Lord Bishop of Nova Scotia.

1891. A daughter m. Senator Odell, of Fredericton, N. B.

1892. A daughter m. Bishop Kelley, of Newfoundland.

1893. Two sons are clergymen of the Established Church, in England.

JEDUTHAN, of West Springfield, Mass., tanner, (son of Col. Pelatiah
Bliss and Ruth Woodworth, of W. S.,) was born April 10, 1774, and mar-
ried May 7th, 1805, to Susannah, daughter of Stephen and Mary [Thorp]
Tracy. She was born in Peru, Mass., in 1778, and died Aug. 7, 1868. He
died May 5, 1855. Issue :

1895. Delia, b. March 18, 1806, m. Sept. 11, 1834, Eben Weston, of W. S., and died Sept. 21,

and d. Nov. 9, 1848. He was afterwards m. in Springfield, June 16, 1858-9, to Lucy
M. Smith, (b. 1812,)— no issue. He resided twenty-four years in Georgia,— is a mer-
chant, and at present (1878) postmaster at Mittineague, Mass.

1898. Susan, b. March 11, 1811, m. May 9, 1848, John D. Smith, farmer, of W. S., and is now

(1877) living, s. p. He was a son of Daniel and Sally Smith, of W. S., and was b. 1805.

1899. Jane, b. Nov. 14, 1813, d. April 15, 1820.

1900. Mary Ruth, b. Jan. 8, 1815, m. Feb. 13, 1850, Lorin Beals and is now (1877) living. One

June 13, 1780, and married June 28, 1810, to Lucretia, daughter of David
and Meribah Ashley. She was born in W. S., May 1, 1782, and died there,
Jan. 10, 1865. He d. in N. Y. City, March 28, 1868. Issue— b. at W. S. :

and Hannah Van Horn, of W. S.,) was born at that place, Feb. 19, 1783,
and married Oct. 31, 1804, to Lucy, daughter of Derrick (?) and Rachel
VanHorn, of W. S. She was born May 30, 1785, and died March 19, 1863.
He died Ajiril 15, 1854. Issue — born at W. S. :

dletown, Conn., Jan. 15, 1790, and died Nov. 12, 1861. He died April 2,

married Oct. 1, 1803, to Phebe, daughter of Levi and Sarah Chapin. She
was born May 22, 1781, and d. Nov. 12, 1861. He d. May 19, 18G4. Issue :

Capt. MOSES, jr., of N. Y. City, (son of Dea. Moses Bliss and Abiah
Chapin, of Chicopee, Mass.,) was born Sept. 17, 1788, and married to Mrs.
Phebe Fennor, of N. Y. City, and died at Tampico, Mexico, Nov. 30, 1825.
He served in the navy during the war of 1812, and afterwards became a
sea captain. He was a very large man, and weighed 360 lbs. Issue :

FRANCIS, of Springfield, (Cabotville,) Mass., and of Belle Plaine, Scott
Co., Minn., hatter, (son of Dea. Moses Bliss and Abiah Chapin, of Chicopee,
Mass.,) was born Aug. 19, 1793, was a soldier in the war of 1812, and was
wounded in the leg, just above the ankle. He was married Feb. 5, 1824,
to Nancy J., daughter of Wentworth and Rachel Harrington, Avho was born
in Westborough, Mass., Dec. 14, 1803, and both were living in 1880. Issue :

1938. Emeline Maria, born in Shrewsbury, Mass., Sept. 9, 1825, m. in Belle Plaine, Dec. 10,

1857, John Cottier, who was b. in Douglas, Isle of Man, July 4, 1825. He d. in Ar-
kansas, June 4, 1866. Issue : John William Cottier, b. in B. P., Sept. 4, 1858. The
mother was afterwards married in B. P., Dec. 10, 1871, to Frederic Greene, who was
b. in Amherst, Mass., June 28, 1811. She d. July 4, 1879.

Dej^uty Marshal of Chittenden Co., for over twenty years. He was mar-
ried Aug. 7, 1808, to Mary Pixley, of Burlington, Vt., who died Aug. 30,
1817. Issue :

ington, Cal., in 1870.

kins, in Burlington, in 1839, and Priest in the same Church in 1860, — was Rector of
Trinity Church, in Shelburne from September, 1860, till March, 1862, and now (1878)
has charge of the parishes at Milton and Georgia, Vt. He was married in B., Sept.
10, 1860, to Anne, daughter of Carlos Baxter, Esq., of B., (b. Dec. 28, 1835.) No issue.

PELATIAH, of Troy, N. Y., bookseller, (son of Luther Bliss and Lovice
Stebbins, of Bennington, Vt.,) was born at B., April 3, 1785, and \^as mar-
ried in Troy, Dec. 29, 1810, to Sally, daughter of Richard H. and Theodotia
[Conklin] Fitch, of T. She was born in Norwalk, Conn., Sept. 28, 1793,
and died at T., Jan. 2, 1839. He died Sept. 30, 1818. Issue, b. in T. :

1961. LeGrand Cannon, b. Jan. 13, 1812, merchant in N. Y. City, died in Hartford, Conn.,

Jan. 1, 1851, un. m.

1962. James Lawrence, b. Nov. 1, 1813, m. in Troy, Sept. 16, 1839, Lydia M. Brintnall, of T.,

and afterwards, at Brooklyn, N. Y., Oct. 26, 1867, Mrs. Patty H. Cabbel, and died in

JAMES COLTON, M. D., of N. Y. City, (son of Luther Bliss and Lo-
vice Stebbins, of Bennington, Vt.,) was born Jan. 3, 1791, studied medicine
with Dr. Taylor, of Lansingburg, N. Y., and afterwards with Dr. Burritt,
of Troy. In the winter of 1811-12 he went to N. Y. City to attend medical
lectures, and soon entered the office of Dr. Borrowe. He became the resi-
dent house surgeon of the N. Y. Hospital, and graduated at the College of
Physicians and Surgeons, in 1815, commenced the practice of his profession
in the city, and rose to great eminence. He filled many important offices
in various medical and other local institutions, and was an officer in the
American Tract Society for over thirty j'ears. He was married Nov. 9,
1819, to Maria, daughter of John P. Mumford, of N. Y. City. She was b.
Nov. 17, 1793, and died March 2, 1851. Issue :

1965. Emily, b. Sept. 18, 1820, d. Sept. 18, 1821.

1966. Emily, b. May 30, 1822, m. ab. 1850-55, Dr. James B. Gould, a surgeon in tbe U. S. Navy,

and her health failing, they removed to Rome, Italy, where she established, March
20, 1871, the first evangelical day and Sunday school planted in Rome. Three little
girls attended the first morning. In the winter of 1872, she had upwards of two hun-
dred children under regular daily instruction. In the winter of 1872-3 she estab-
lished a " Christian Home," where a limited number of hopeful children might be
more systematically educated for useful work in days to come. She also assisted in
the establishment of the American Union Church in Rome, and was one of the chief
promoters of the Orphan Asylum in Florence: We might also refer to the earnest
work of this noble Christian toiler in other channels of usefulness; to her genial hos-
pitality in ministering to the comfort of thousands of her fellow-citizens during their
visits to Rome ; — and to the very able and brilliant correspondence she found time
to furnish the N. Y. " Evening Post," the N. Y. " Observer," and other prominent
American papers. She rested from her earthly labors, August 31st, 1875, at the an-
cient city of Perugia, in Italy. She was beloved and respected by all, and her death
was deeply regretted. He d. of heart disease, in N. Y. City, Dec. 15, 1S79.

The father was afterwards married, April 24th, 1832, to Mrs. Martha,
[Birdsall,] widow of Ezekiel Geer. She was born Dec. 2, 1793. He died

NOAH, of Brimfield and Warren, Mass., tanner, (son of Samuel Bliss
and Mary Gleason, of Warren,) was born Jan. 22, 1763, and married June
16, 1785, to Alice Leavens, of Killingly, Conn. She was born April 28th,
1763, and died July 1, 1837. He died Sept. 25, 1829. Issue :

1969. Calvin, (Dr.) b. in W., March 6, 1786, m. March 12, 1812, Fannie, daughter of Jesse and

Lucy [Keyes] Fletcher, of Ludlow, Vt., and d. Sept. 13, 1813. She was born about
17S8. No living issue.

1970. Olive, b. Sept, 10, 17S8, m. May 28, 1811, Abial Pearson, of Windsor, Vt,, and d. Jan. 2S,

1838. He was a son of William and Hannah Pearson, of W., and was born at Poult-
ney, Vt., about 1789. He d. about 1875. Eleven ch.

1971. Lucy, b. July 9, 1791, d. Feb. 16, 1851, un. m.

1972. *Joseph, b. May 9, 1793, d. May 15, 1874.

and cooper, (son of Samuel Bliss and Mary Gleason, of Warren, Mass.,)
was born at W., Jan. 14, 17G5, and married April 12, 1787, to Mary Shep-
herd. She was born at W., May 24, 1758, and died Jan. 19, 1850. He d.
April 3, 1842. Issue :

27, 1806. After Mr. B.'s death she was again in., and d. May 19, 1877, in Rowe, Mass.

JONATHAN", of Mexico, N. Y., farmer, (son of Samuel Bliss and Mary
Gleason, of Warren, Mass.,) was born Oct. 16, 1770, and married Feb. 11,
1794, to Mary Bond. She died in M., in 1820. Issue :

1983. Nancy, b. in 1801, m. Win. Tompkins, farmer, and resided in Michigan, where she died

Jan. 7, 1S55.

1984. Warren, b. in 1803, m. Marsia (Marcia) Anderson, — was a carpenter, resided in Parish,

Oswego Co., N. Y., where he d. in June, 1874. A son, J. W., is living in Parish.

The father was afterwards married, March 13, 1825, to Julia Fairchilds,
and died in M., Aug. 8, 1854. She was living, in 1879, in Colosse, Oswego
Co., N. Y. Issue:

1985. Polly, b. in M., Sept. 20, 1827, m. Sept., 1850, Elias Cushman, farmer, of Barnard, Vt.,

and aft. of Dugway, N. Y. He was a son of Josiah Cushman, of B., where he was
b. Nov. 28, 1826. She d. (May 19?) June 1854.

1986. Henry Marshall, b. in M., May 29, 1830, m. Jan. 7, 1855, Emma Eliza Johnston. He

is a farmer at Parish, Oswego Co., N. Y., weighs over 300 pounds, and can carry a

bushel of wheat in each hand at the same time.

Gleason, of W.,) was born Dec. 2, 1773, and married April 2, 1801, to Bet-
sey Works. She was born at Sturbridge, Mass., March 1, 1775, and died
March 2, 1851. He died Aug. 31, 1848. Issue :

1993. *Rensselaer, b. Nov. 30, 1802, d. Jan. 4, 1871.

1994. Oliver, b. Aug. 17, 1804, d. Oct. 14, 1805.

1995. *Charles, b. Sept. 16, 1806.

1996. Oliver Henry, born Sept. 29, 1808, was a merchant at New Orleans, La. He was m.

March 10, 1835, to Mary Young, who d. suddenly, Oct. 3, of the same year, and was

■buried in Northampton, Mass. He did not again marry, but d. in New York, Oct.
12, 1851, without issue. He was probably buried at Northampton, Oct. 17th, as the
Massachusetts State records give his death as occurring on that date.

Dr. DAVID PORTER, of Sparta, Morrow Co., Ohio, (son of Samuel
Bliss and Mary Gleason, of Warren, Mass.,) was born in W., Oct. 3, 1779,
and married to Polly Vantress, of N. Y. She was born in N. Y. State, in
1792. and died at S., March 28, 1864. He died April 11, 1848. He was a
talented and celebrated physician — a man of marked peculiarities, the more
noticeable of which were, reticence, and the determination to conduct his
own affairs, in accordance with his honest convictions of duty and principle.

ABNER, of Georgia, Vt., farmer, (son of Solomon Bliss and Martha
Young, of Weston, Mass.,) was born Oct. 19, 1764, removed to Georgia
about 1790, and married in September, 1791, to Miriam, daughter of Elijah
and Miriam [Jones] Dee, of Saybrook, Conn. She was born Sept. 3, 1771,
and died Sept. 28, 1831. He died July 20, 1811. Issue :

Capt. SOLOMON, of Georgia, Vt., (son of Solomon Bliss and Mar-
tha Young, of Weston, Mass.,) was born Oct. 26, 1769, and married Nov.
29, 1791, to Betsey, daughter of Capt. Stephen and Rebecca [Young] Davis.
She was born Dec. 6, 1769, and died May 21, 1822. Issue :

June 11, 1835, Clarissa Woodsvorth, and d. without issue, Dec. 28, 1840.

The father was afterwards married to Polly McMaster, widow of a Mr.
Sabin, (or Town?) and died Sept. 4, 1834. He was a private in Capt.
Post's Company, from Georgia, in the war of 1813, was a Justice of the
Peace in Georgia nineteen years, and represented the town in the Vermont
Legislature in 1816-17.

LOOMIS, of Madison, Lake Co., Ohio, (son of Solomon Bliss and Mar-
tha Young, of Weston, Mass.,) was born July 17, 1773, and married May
12, 1807, to Mrs. Elizabeth Studley, whose maiden name was Earl. She
was born April 3, 1771, and died Oct. 17, 1810. Issue :

of Oliver and Phebe Farwell, of Fairfax, Vt. She was born Nov. 20, 1790,
and died Aug. 24, 1832. He died June 5, 1854. Issue :

Long. She was born at Bennington, Vt., and died at Georgia, Vt., May 5,
1810. Issue, born at G. :

2032. Porter, born March 26, 1801, was a farmer at Sodus Point, ST. Y., and was drowned at

Cleveland, O., July 24, 1835. His widow and ch. are said to have " returned east."

2033. Maranda, b. March 6, 1804, m. Franklin Dee, a farmer at Georgia, where she died, Sept.

10, 1S27. A daughter, Diana, b. in G., Feb. 16, 1825, m. at G. in 1844, Henry B. Post,
farmer, of G., (where he was b. April 28, 1822.) Issue : 1. Franklin M. Post, born
December 4, 1845, served three years in the war for the Union, — resides in California.
