was born 25 Apr., 1822; a woman of much depth of character, quick and
decisive in the right. Residence, Antrim. After the deatl), of his brother
John he occupied the homestead ; a prosperous farmer. He died i Jan., 1867.

born in Groton, Mass., 27 July, 1813. Residence, Wethersfield, 111. He
removed to Kewanee, 111., and has served as postmaster, and trustee for the
Congregational Church, and is a real estate dealer.

in Newington, Conn., 29 June, 1815. Residence, Grinnell, Iowa. In early
years, when sheriff and collector in Henry county. 111., he was often obliged
to chain his prisoners to the cooking stove, the county being without a jail.
He was elected trustee of the State Agricultural College; trustee of the
Congregational churcli ; mayor four years ; a member of the Illinois Legis-
lature two years. His picture is in the History of Hollis.

RUTH CHANNING LITTLE, born in Hollis, N. H., 3 July, 1815,

Nevin, D. D., of Shippensburg, Pa. He was born 9 May, 1814, and at the
age of twenty-seven years was chosen president of Franklin College, and
received the degree of D. D. in 1869. He is a Presbyterian and an author.

REV. WILLIAM CUTTER TENNEY, born in Newmarket, N. H., 26
July, 1817, son of William and Phebe (Wheeler); m. in Dec, 1842, Catherine
P. Clarke of Auburn, N. H. She died in Northfield, Mass., 8 July, 1850. He
married 15 June, 1852 (his 2 w.), Elizabeth E. Bruce, daughter of Hon. Joseph
and Harriet (Fay) Bruce of Grafton, Mass. Mrs. Elizabeth E. Tenney was
born in July, 1822.

He was graduated at Harvard College in 1838, and later at Cambridge
Divinity School. His first pastorate was over the Unitarian Church in
Kennebunk, Me., where he was ordained in Oct., 1845. After this he sup-
plied at Upton from 1848 to Sept., 1849; followed by a nine years' settle-
ment at Northfield, Mass. In Oct., 1859, he accepted charge of the Lee
Church in Lowell, Mass., which he served six years. He removed in Oct.,
1865, to Lawrence, Kan., and in 1869 retired from the ministry. In 1879 he
removed to Kansas City, Mo., for a permanent home. Three children died

unnamed.

CAROLINE PHEBE TENNEY, born in Newmarket, N. H., 13 May,
1821, daughter of William and Phebe (Wheeler); m. at Shanghai, in 1854,
Rev. Cleveland Keith. In 1850 she became a missionary to China, and
died at San Francisco, Cal., 10 July, 1862, on her return to America for her
health. A valuable memoir of Mrs. Keith may be found in the Harvard
University library, written by Rev. W. C. Tenney.

MARY CUMMINGS TENNEY, born in Hollis, N. H., 9 Nov., 1819,
daughter of Ralph E. and Phebe C. (Smitii); m. 29 Nov., 1848, Luther Pres-

cott Hubbard, son of Luther and Hannah (Russell). He was born in Hollis,
30 June, 1808, and helped to build the first cotton mill in Nashua, N. H. ;
afterward the Bunker Hill monument, and superintended the granite work
for the Tremont House, Boston. He has for thirty.five years been the
financial agent of the American Seamen's Friend Society, also secretary of
the New England Society of New York. Residence, Greenwich, Conn., but
has his office in New York city. His writings are widely published by the
religious and secular press.

WILLIAM N. TENNEY, born in Hollis, N. H., i Mch., 1821, son of
Ralph E. and Phebe C. (Smith); m. in Derry, N. H., 12 Oct., 1847, Mary
Elizabeth Perkins, who was born in Topsfield, Mass., 16 Sept., 1821, and
died in Hollis 24 Mch., 1874.

He was a farmer on the ancestral estate, and served as selectman in
1848-49. In 1856 he was appointed postmaster, which office he held two
or more years. He died 14 Sept., 1874.

Hollis, 6 Nov., 1828. Residence, Hollis, until he removed soon after 1855

grain dealer in Boston.

resided in Chicago since i860; a publisher of atlases, maps, charts, engrav-
ings, etc. He served as captain in Co. A, 124th reg. 111. infantry, in the
civil war of 1861.

DEACON CALEB TENNEY, born in Newbury, Mass., 28 Nov., 1804,
son of Moses and Hannah (Whitaker); m. 17 Oct., 1826, Rhoda March,
who was born in Newburyport, Mass., 22 Dec, 1807, and died i6 Jan.,
1855. He married 29 Nov., 1855, his second wife, Rebecca P. Jackman of J
Georgetown, Mass. Mrs. Rebecca P. Tenney died 9 Sept., 1888.

They resided in Georgetown, Mass. He was justice of the peace,
selectman, overseer of the poor, and for many years a deacon in the
Congregational Church. He died 5 Nov., 1886, of typhoid pneumonia.

MAJOR MOSES TENNEY, born in Newbury, Mass., 18 June, 1808,
son of Moses and Hannah (Whitaker); m. 6 Apr., 183 1, Mary Ann North-
end, who died 18 May, 1888. Residence, Georgetown, Mass. In 1854 he
was elected senator, and chosen State treasurer and receiver general in
1855, which office he held for five consecutive years, 1856-61. He uses
"centennial blankets " woven by his wife's mother one hundred years ago;
said blankets are in a remarkable state of preservation.

JUDGE ORLANDO BARNARD TENNEY, born in Salem, Mass.,
18 Dec, 1816, sonof David B. and Hannah (Little); m. 24 Nov., 1847, Lydia
M. Harriman, who was born 13 July, 1820. In 1825 he removed to George-
town, Mass., and served as chairman of the selectmen from 1856 to 1872;
representative in 1866; senator in 1 870-1 ; war magistrate, town treasurer,
1883-4-5 ; treasurer of the savings bank, and for a period the librarian of
the Peabody library.

Judge Tenney is one of the best presiding ofificers ; a fine public speaker,
clear, logical, convincing, and does his work well, in a conscientious and
impartial manner.

DAVID BARNARD TENNEY, born in Salem, Mass., 13 Feb., 1826,
son of David B. and Hannah T. (Little); m. in Newburyport, Mass., 11
Oct., 1849, Caroline M. Stocker. Residence, Georgetown, Mass.; removed
soon after 1852 to Haverhill, Mass., and was for several years accountant
in one of the largest shoe establishments in the town. He is a Republican;
a prominent Mason; P. H. P. of Pentucket Chapter; justice of the peace,,
and clerk of Linwood Cemetery Corporation.

Mr. Tenney was elected city clerk at the establishment of a city govern-
ment in 1870, and reelected as clerk and treasurer every year to date, 1891,
by a unanimous vote. (For his picture, see " Haverhill Anniversary Book.")

WILLIAM B. TENNEY, born in Weare, N. H., 20 Mch., 1817, son of
William and Susanna (Bailey) ; m. Eliza H. Buxton, daughter of James and
Sarah (Huntington) of Weare. Mrs. Tenney was born in Jan., 1816, and

died in Dec, i860. He married (his 2 w.) Abigail G. Osborn, daughter of
John and Abigail (Green) of Weare. She was born in 1832. Residence,
Weare, lot 28, range 4. Mr. Tenney and wife, Abigail G., were taxpayers
in 18S0. His son, Edwin J., was a member of Co. D, Seventh reg. ; mus-
tered 13 Dec, 1861 ; discharged for disability 17 July, 1862, and enlisted in
Veteran Reserve Corps, 5 Dec, 1863.

CAPTAIN GORHAM DUDLEY TENNEY, born in Rowley, Mass.,
29 Jan., 1830, son of Capt. Gorham P. and Ann C. (Lull); m. 24 May, 1857,
Harriet I. Larkin, daughter of Samuel Larkin of Georgetown, Mass. Res-
dence, Georgetown, formerly Rowley, on the Goodrich farm, where the

Indians shot Mr. Goodrich while praying with his family, and killed the
wife and two daughters, 23 Oct., 1692.

In 1838, when Georgetown was assuming the position of a separate town-
ship, Capt. Tenney received the appointment on the " first board " of
selectmen and assessors ; a member of school committee ; treasurer for the
Peabody library.

and Eleanor (Giddings) of Weare, N. H. Mrs. Tenney was born 9 Mch.,
1838, and died in 1871. He married in 1875 (his 3 w.) Clara Scribner.
