ton, Mass. ; died Mar. 8, 1859; married (2), Oct. 1, 1859, Harriet
Brown Pinkham, of Nantucket, Mass., died Dec. 3, 1874.

In August, 1833, Mr. Locke settled in Lowell, Mass., and for
six years was a clerk in a large manufactory. In 1839 he was
elected a member of the Common Council of that city, and in 1849
received an appointment in the Boston Custom House.

He was greatly interested in genealogical and historical matters,

and in the years between 1850 and 1860, collected much valuable

information in regard to the early records of the LeBa,ron and

Goodwin families, which has served as the foundation of tliis work.

Charles Otis" Boutelle (^Amv' G-oodwin), born Aug. 4, 1813,
in Lexington, Mass.; died July 22, 1888, in Hampton, Va. ; mar-
ried in Cambridge, Mass., Louisa Bartlett, a granddaughter of Dr.
James Thacher, the liistorian of Plymouth, Mass. In 1842 he was
employed as an engineer in the Borden survey of Massachusetts ;
his work there led to liis appointment on the U. S. Coast Survey.
During the Civil War liis services were of great value ; he accom-
panied Dupont in the attack on Port Royal, and piloted the fleet ;
and discharged a similar duty at Charleston ; he remained on the
Southern coast as fleet hydrographer, serving vnth credit under
Admiral Dalilgren, and receiving the personal thanks of Ms com-
manding officers. After the close of the war he was appointed
Inspector of Lighthouses on the Southern Atlantic Coast, and for
a number of years was one of the Harbor Commissioners for the
improvement of the port of Norfolk, Va. In recent years he had
charge of all the trigonometiical work in the States, conducted by
the Coast Survey, until failing health compelled him to relinquish
further duty.
