Joseph Warren" Revere {Lydia LeBS' Goodwin), born May
17, 1812, in Boston, Mass.; died April 20, 1880, in Hoboken,
N. J. ; married Oct. 4, 1842, Rosanna Duncan Lamb. In early
life General Revere was connected with the U. S. Navj' ; later he
accepted the appointment from Mexico as Instructor of Artillery
with rank of Lieutenant Colonel. At the opening of the Civil
War he was Colonel of the 7th Reg't N. J. Vols., and later had
command of the 3d Brigade, 2d Div., 3d Corps, from wliich he was
transferred to the 2d Brigade of the same divisiou. Res., Morris-

John Abbott" Goodwin (Isaac^), born May 21, 182-i; died
Sept. 21, 1884 ; married May 28, 1850, Martha M. Fisher, of Su,d-
bury, Mass. He was Speaker of the House of Representatives in
1858, and Postmaster of Lowell in 1861, in which year he received
the honorary degree of A. M. from Harvard College. He was a
writer of note, liis " Pilgrim Republic " being one of his later and
best known works. In 1876 he wrote "a true story" entitled
" The First of the LeBarons," which was published in " The Old
Ladies' Piece Bag," a magazine issued for the benefit of " The
Home for Aged Women," in Lowell, Mass. The account wMch
he gives in this differs decidedly from that of his sister's, Mrs.
Austin, in her " Nameless Nobleman." This story is to be found
in the appendix.

Mrs. Austin was a well known writer of fiction ; two of her books,

ters," being of special interest to descendants of Dr. Francis
LeBaron.

was graduated from Harvard College in 1840, and from the Harvard
Law School in 1845. He was a lawyer with a large ■ practice in
Boston, Mass., President of the Bar Association of Suffolk co., and
an Overseer of Harvard for many years. He was offered the

position of Justice of the Supreme Court of the State by Gov.
Russell, but declined the honor. Very full and appreciative no-
tices of his life and character aj)peared in the papers of the day,
at the time of his death.

where he received the degree of LL. D. in 1891 ; the same honor
has been conferred upon liim by Amherst, Columbia, the Univer-
sities of Cambridge, England, and of Edinburgh, Scotland ; Oxford
University gave him the degree of D. C. L. in 1890, and Gottingen
that of Ph. D. in 1855. He has been Eliot Professor of Greek in
Harvaid for many years, and is widely known as the author of a
Greek Grammar, which is a standard text-book in many colleges
and preparatory schools. He is a Fellow of the American Acad-
emy of Arts and Sciences, a member of the Massachusetts His-
torical Society, and of many learned societies at home and abroad.
He has been made a Knight of the Order of the Saviour, by the
King of Greece.
