annual meeting in May at Virginia Beach.

1944 Joan Eanes (N) is assistant professor
of nursing at MCV.
1945 Paul Mazel (P), of Nashville, Tennessee,
was in Brazil in August. While there he gave
seminars in the physiology department at the
University of Sao Paulo and at the medical
school of the University of Sao Paulo at
Ribeirao Preto.
1946 William R. McCune (M) began a resi-
dency in urology last year at the University of
Maryland Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland.

nine years, has resigned to accept .the joint
position of assistant director of hospital phar-
macy and instructor in the school of pharmacy
at the Ohio State University Medical Center
in Columbus, Ohio. He and his wife, Amanda
Baker (N'4J), and two sons, Don, age 9, and
Bob, age 7, moved there September 1.
Helen J. Brown (PT) is doing physical therapy
at Marine Base Hospital in Quantico, Vir-
ginia.
Walter M. Ormes, Jr. (D), has left Fort
McPherson, Georgia, to be assigned as chief
of periodontics, United States Army Hospital,
Heidelberg, Germany. He was awarded a
Third United States Army certificate of achieve-
ment by the commanding general, Third United

Fort McPherson. His daughter, Anne Harrison,
entered as a freshman in nursing at MCV in
September.
Howard E. Wilkins (M) is practicing internal
medicine in Downey, California. He is a
member of the medical staffs of St. Francis
and Mission Hospitals and is assistant clinical
professor of medicine in the University of
Southern California Medical School. He is
president of the Southeast District Los Angeles
County Medical Society. He spoke before the
Soroptimist Club on "Heart Disease in
Women" recently.
1948 Irving B. Fritz (D) received a Ph. D.
in physiology at the University of Chicago and
spent two years in the Army. He had a delight-
ful year in Copenhagen, Denmark, on a post-
doctoral fellowship in the Medical Physiology
Institute, department of physiology. He was
assistant director of the department of me-
tabolism and endocrinology at Michael Reese
Hospital in Chicago for two years. In 1956
he moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where his
post is assistant professor in the department of
physiology. University of Michigan. He and
his wife, Helen, have three sons: David, 7;
Jonathan, 6; and Winston, 4.
Elizabeth F. Harlan (PHN), of Luray, Virginia,
became director of the State Bureau of Public
Health Nursing on October 1. The Bureau ad-
ministers the work of some 275 public health
nurses assigned to local health departments in
Virginia. She is also president of the Virginia
League for Nursing.
Ewing William McPherson (M), of Dickson,
Tennessee, is married and has three daughters.
He is a partner with three other general prac-
titioners in a fifty bed hospital.
1949 Jean Hayter (N), assistant professor
of medical-surgical nursing at MCV, was
awarded a National League for Nursing fellow-
ship to complete requirements for her doctor's
degree and has returned to Columbia University
for the 1960-61 school session.
1950 Graham Berkley (P), of Danville, Vir-
ginia, hit the "jack pot" of $1,000 in a recent
contest of radio station WDVA.
Caroline Powers (XRT), of Hampton, Virginia,
has two daughters, five and three.
Allan M. linger (M) resigned from MCV in
August to take a position in San Francisco,
California.
1951 Emma Jane Freeman (M), of Buckhan-
non. West Virginia, has been appointed direc-
tor of the division of National Child Health
of the State Department of Health of West
Virginia. She assumed her new duties in
Charleston on July 1. She has engaged in the
practice of her specialty of pediatrics in Buck-
hannon since 1954. She has served as part-time
health officer for Upshur County since Janu-
ary, 1959.
Lewis B. Hasty (M), of East Point, Georgia,
has recently been certified by the American
Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Tom Holland (P) has been unusually busy
lately opening his new Westover Pharmacy in
Danville, Virginia.
William D. Irvine (M), formerly of Lewisburg,
West Virginia, who has completed a residency
in internal medicine at Beckley Memorial Hos-
pital, has located at Laurens, South Carolina,
for the practice of his specialty.
Wallace Klein (P), of Salem, Virginia, has been
elected president of the Roanoke Pharmaceu-
tical Association. His team-mates are Wallace
Cundiff (P'53), vice-president, and Jim Roberts
(P'56), treasurer. Kenneth Arritt (P'42) is
immediate past president.
Jamie Lisle (PT) has been appointed director
of the physical therapy department at MCV.
Faith Collins Pratt (N) has moved from Buffa-
lo, New York, to Charlottesville, Virginia,

Gerald M. Stahl (P) was recently elected to
the presidency of the North Carolina Society
of Hospital Pharmacists. For the past five years
he has been chief pharmacist at Watts Hospital,
Durham, North Carolina.
1952 Beverly (N) and Roland Birckhead (M),
of Charlton Heights, West Virginia, announce
the birth of their son, William Windsor, on
June 14.
Ruth Latimer (PT) has resigned from the Uni-
versity of Maryland and will be in Morocco,
Africa, for approximately six months. The
Moroccan government requested medical as-
sistance through the World Health Organiza-
tion for physicians, nurses, and therapists. The
United States sold some surplus lubricating mo-
tor oil, which was made into an adulterated
cooking oil by crooked merchants. It con-
tained a nerve poison when taken internally,
and very rapidly some 10,000 people became
paralyzed before the cause was determined.
Miss Latimer plans to take a month's tour of
Europe before her return.
Bud Shelton (P) and his wife, of Martinsville,
Virginia, are the proud parents of a new
daughter.
1953 Lena B. McGaha (PT) and B. J. Brake
were married May 21 and are living in Knox-
ville, Tennessee.
Fred J. Sarver (P) is now employed at the
Veterans Administration Regional Office in
Roanoke, Virginia.

received a master of medical science degree
from Ohio State University on August 26.
Philip Frederick, Jr. (M), is beginning the
practice of internal medicine in Richmond,
Virginia.
Alton R. Sharpe, Jr. (M), was discharged from
the United States Navy in August and is a
staff physician at McGuire Hospital in Rich-
mond, Virginia.
1955 Reginald Rudyard Cooper (M), of Pen-
sacola, Florida, received a master of science
degree from the State University of Iowa on
June 10.
Andrew S. Tegeris (M) is a senior resident in
pathology at National Institute of Health,
Bethesda, Maryland. He and his wife, Hloy,
have a daughter, Christine Maria, 18 months
old.

R. Page (M) and Sally Sewell Hudson (N'56)
visited his parents in Richmond, Virginia, be-
fore going to Harvard Medical School where

James W. Proffitt (M) finished his residency in
radiology in June and was called into the
United States Naval Reserve in July. He is
serving at the United States Naval Hospital in
Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
Alfred Szumski (MA and PT'51), assistant pro-
fessor of physical therapy at MCV. attended
the annual conference of the American Physi-
cal Therapy Association in Pittsburgh, Penn-
sylvania, in June. He discussed his graduate
research project in the department of physi-
ology at MCV.
Eleanor Moser (N) has returned to the MCV
faculty after a year's study at Boston University.
1957 Daniel B. Barber (M) is in general
practice in Charleston, West Virginia.
John L. Butler (P) is doing graduate work in
hospital pharmacy at the Philadelphia College
of Pharmacy and Science.
Vernon C. Howerton (D) has resigned as in-
structor in operative dentistry at MCV to take
a graduate course in orthodontics at Columbia
University.

Marshall Klavan (M) is at the Memorial Hos-
pital for Cancer and Allied Diseases of the
Cornell Medical Center in New York where
he will further his training in gynecologic
oncology.
Percy Wooton (M) is chief of medicine at the
United States Naval Dispensary, Norfolk, Vir-
ginia. This is the largest naval dispensary in
the world with 40 doctors attached to the
command.
Hugh Clark (P) and Ron Palin (P) are oper-
ating Clark-Palin Pharmacy in Bristol, Tennes-
see.
Nellie Ray Dorsey (M), of Lebanon, Virginia,
has accepted a position with the Virginia State
Department of Health and is assistance director
of Russell, Wise, and Dickenson Health Dis-
trict.
1958 John A. Cross, Jr. (M), is continuing
in his surgical residency at North Carolina
Memorial Hospital, Chapel Hill, North Caro-
lina.
Bernard Franko (Ph.D.) attended the meeting
of the Pharmacological Society in Seattle,
Washington, in August.
K. Arnold Gill, Jr.(M). is a medical officer at
the United States Naval Station in Green Cove
Springs, Florida. He plans to return to Virginia
for general practice after July, 1962.
Robert D. Hess (M) began general practice in
July in Bridgeport, West Virginia.
Sherman E. Hatfield (M) is serving a teaching
residency in ear, nose, and throat at Baylor
University.
Gerald L. Selph (P). assistant chief pharma-
cist of the Richmond Memorial Hospital, Rich-
mond, Virginia, became chief pharmacist at
King's Daughters' Hospital in Staunton, Vir-
ginia, on September 1.
1959 Jim Leonard (M) and his wife, Carolyn
(N'57), were recently on the Groucho Marx's
"You Bet Your Life" show. Jim interned in
Santa Monica and is now in Bethesda, Mary-
land.
James C. Rahman (M) has begun general prac-
tice in Walkerton, Virginia. In 1956 the King
and Queen County Ruritan Club was trying to
secure a general practitioner for the county.
Dr. Rahman promised the committee to prac-
tice there on the basis of one year for each
SI, 000 advanced to pay off the club's "in-
vestment." They have constructed a clinic for
his use.
Malcolm Tenney, Jr. (M), has been assigned
as director of the Amherst-Nelson Health Dis-
trict and will assume his position upon the
completion of a three-month period of orienta-
tion.
Stanley L. Well ins (D) and his wife of Coral
Gables, Florida, have a son born on August 18.
Joseph M. Znoy (M) has been appointed a
fellow in surgery in the Mayo Foundation at
Rochester. Minnesota.
1960 Helen J. Beavers (P), accompanied by
Mrs. Annie S. Leeper. instructor in the depart-
ment of chemistry and pharmaceutical chem-
istry, attended the American Pharmaceutical
Association convention in Washington. Miss
Beavers received the scholarship ring offered
by the Grand Council of Kappa Epsilon, a
pharmaceutical fraternity for women in pharm-
acy, at the annual breakfast held during the
convention. Miss Beavers as an undergraduate
received the Kappa Epsilon Zada M. Cooper
scholarship award.
Patricia Ann Bosserman (N) was married on
July 2 to Lawton W. Posey, who is the minis-
ter of the Belle Haven and Powelton Presby-
terian Churches on the Eastern Shore of Vir-
ginia.
