and was in demand as an inspector of mineral lands. In early youth he
became a cripple from the effects of a fever, but he bravely followed his
chosen work, until he was removed by heart failure. He had in un-
finished Mss., valuable information which, had not his health failed,
he intended to publish.

On his return voyage from Europe in 1886, his steamer encountered
fourteen days of raging storm, and to use his own expression, "seven
days of straight cyclone." The paralyzing effect of rapid succession of
deathly shocks during those seven wild, withering days, brought into
activity the latent, lingering disease, from which he subsequently died.
The sparkle and brilliancy for which he had been noted through life, did
not forsake him in his last hours. When conscious, his cheerful conver-
sation and quaint sayings, or " Wilberisms," as they were termed, gave
his sick-room more the tone and appearance of a cordial and friendly re-
ception room, than that of a death chamber. He was a ripe scholar. He
ranks among the leading Scientists. Manifold has been the world's
profit from his being in it. He was bountiful in life, and brave in death.
Following is an extract from a letter written in 1883, in response to a re-
quest for family data, for this book :

"Your letter waited some time,— until my return from the Rocky
Mountains, to which I am bound by so many affinities that every year I
must go and see them. Though it was hot in the valley, I was near a
huge snowbank at Georgetown, Col., ten miles long, two miles wide, and
six hundred feet deep. I thought of the poor sweltering sinners away
down below, like Dives, longing for something to cool their parched
tongues.

I send you the Record from father's family Bible, of our group,
most of whom grew up in your sight, in the old Auburn woods. Six
survive,— father and mother rest in Lakeside Cemetery, Aurora, Ills.,
where by loving hands their graves are decked with vines and roses, and
we have a memory of them far richer than any inheritance of Gold. How
true and honest was every day of their powerful lives !

"I have looked up our branch of the English tree, as far as possi-
ble,— the Wilbers, Wilbors, Wilburs, Wilbours, Welbores, Woolbers, are
all the same,— also the Wilberforce tribe are of the same stock. These
tribes or families lived in Devonshire, coming thither from Saxony, after
William the Conqueror. Those who lived on the uplands were Wilbers.

He was a home loving man, and there found his greatest enjoyment.
He was serving his third term as justice of the peace and his record in
that office was like his whole life ; he always counselled peace. He ex-
emplified Bryant 's beautiful words : "So live, that when thy summons
comes to join the innumerable throng,— thou go not, like the galley slave
at night scourged to his dungeon, but, sustained and soothed by an un-
faltering trust, approach thy grave, like one who draws the drapery of
his couch about him, and lies down to pleasant dreams."

mington, 111., d. Feb. 8, 1901, in Aurora, 111.

She was a beautiful, queenly woman, with rare attractions of mind
and heart, beloved by her friends and adored by her family. The fol-
lowing extract from a letter after the death of her brother, gives
a slight glimpse into her mentality: "My mission to Ohio this time was
a very sad one, yet I brought home with me many pleasant memories,—
I was glad to be with my dear brother in his last hours,— to go down into
the "valley and the shadow of death" with him,— he passed so peace-
fully, even cheerfully, into the life beyond—.

I shall always love Ohio— I love the everlasting hills— the dear asso-
ciations that linger around my careless, happy childhood— my good
father and mother, with the home full of happy, healthful, handsome
brothers and sisters,— now— awaiting me on the other side—."

Henry P. Wilber was one of Peoria 's oldest and most respected citi-
zens, a man of sterling worth and qualities. He came to Peoria in the
early 50 's from Chardon, 0., and was for some years in the dry-goods
business, which he finally left to identify himself with A. J. Hodges &
Co., of Pekin, 111., in the manufacture of headers. Success in business
always attended Mr. Wilber 's efforts, and in 1890, after a most prosper-
ous career, the firm sold their plant, and from it grew the Acme Har-
vester Company of today. Mr. Wilber was a staunch Universalist, and
active to the last in the affairs of the Church.
