About 1750 a separate church was formed at Hardwick and
these members, together with those admitted in 1762, became the
First Congregational Church at Bennington, and the first Con-
gregational Church in the State of Vermont. Evidently Elisha
Higgins and wife were among these "separatists," for in 1753
they were called to give reasons why they absented themselves
from the Lord's Supper. (See Hardwick Hist., p. 226). Elisha

Elisha Higgins and family are supposed to have settled at Ft.
Ann and taken refuge, with others, at Bennington at the time of
the Revolution. Simon Gifiin, son of Simon, Sr., and Janet Leich-

Family tradition says that Simon Giffin, Jr., lived for a time
at Ft. Ann, now in Washington, then Albany County, N. Y. It
is presumed that his wife Abigail (Higgins) d. there Nov. 24,
1768. He m. 2d, Lydia Crane at Wethersfield, Ct., in 1771, and
served from there during the Revolution. He was a manu-
facturer of spinning wheels. His sons by his first marriage

James and David were in Vermont; in 1796 they were at Ft. Ann
again; in 1800, David was among the first settlers a few miles

active in the War of 181 2. (See Lewis's Northern N. Y. Gen-

Genealogy has omitted the children of Nathaniel, Sr., and Sarah
Pettee of Dedham, who were baptized by Rev. Philip Curtis of
Sharon, and whether Abigail was dau. of Lieut. Nathaniel or of
Nathaniel, Sr., has not been ascertained. The dates in her son's
diary and those on the clergyman's list conflict. However, she
gave her daughters the same names, and she and her husband
were at Clarendon, Vt., and went to Georgia, Vt., with Nathaniel,
Senior's, two sons, Benjamin and Stephen. Edward Giffin, and
Benjamin, Stephen, Nathaniel and Zephaniah Holmes, all enlisted
at Bennington in the Revolutionary War. During the land
controversies which covered the period between 1761 until after
the Revolutionary War, between New York and New Hampshire
and Massachusetts, Nathaniel Holmes, Nathaniel Holmes, Jr.,
and Zephaniah Holmes signed in 1769 the same petition with
other settlers in and around Bennington for protection against
the New York settlers who had been granted the same land.
Nathaniel Holmes, Jr., was one of the ten men who rescued
Baker of Clarendon from the Sheriff of New York in 1772. (See
Hall's Early Hist, of Vt., p. 137.) "In 1789, Stephen and Ben-
jamin Holmes, brothers," (with others) " came into Georgia from
Clarendon and surrounding towns." With them came Edward
Giffin and wife, who were members of the First Congregational
Church at the time of its formation. Benjamin Holmes was
deacon of the Baptist Church formed about the same time; was
called Colonel and was Representative for that town many years.
Capt. Stephen Holmes moved to Fairfax, Vt., and was Repre-
sentative for that town. Zephaniah Holmes was on a school

Wheeler as deacon of the First Congregational Church " and
served until his removal from town in 181 2," when he joined his
brother David at Crary's Mills, near Ogdenburg, St. Lawrence
