Though not in the U. S. service he did effective work for
the Army while on the Staff of E. D. Morgan, the Great
War Governor of New York State, by whom he was made
Brigadier General and Chief Engineer on his Staff in 1861,
Inspector General, Feb. 10, 1862, and Quartermaster
General, July 9, 1862. He was elected Vice-President
of the United States with Gen. Garfield as President, and
succeeded to the Presidency when Garfield died by an
assassin's bullet. He served the unexpired term to the satis-
faction of the Country and with great credit to himself and
his Alma Mater.

July 21, 1861, when his Regiment marched to the rear to

be mustered out.
