died 30 June. 1823.

Mr. Forrester came from Ireland 17 April, 1765, and first
resided with Capt. Daniel Hawthorne, as one of his family
and later he became his son-in-law. He was one of the first
merchants and shippers in Salem, and connected with his
father-in-law in business.

He is styled by his relative. Nathaniel Hawthorne, in the
preface of his " Scarlet Letter," as one of the princely mer-
chants of Salem.

Says the Salem Gazette, 4 April, 1782 : " Ship ' Exchange,'
Capt. Forrester, and brig ' Revolt,' Capt. Phelps, both be-
longing to this port, are taken and carried to New York."

Note. — Thos. Forrester was of the Baron Forresters of Cors-
torphine, Scotland. His wife, Eleanor Healey, was the daugh-
ter of Oliver Healey (brother of Francis Healey, the father of
Rev. John Healey Hutchinson, and the grandfather of the
Earl of Donoughmore). They settled in Ireland, where Simon
Forrester was born, who emigrated to New England when
eighteen years old.

Hathorne until after the birth of Nathaniel, the son, when
Capt. Hawthorne adopted the present style.

Dr. Phelps was a graduate of Harvard, of the class of 1788.
He studied medicine with Dr. Plummer. Settled in Glouces-
ter and practiced there for a time. He was appointed post-
master in 1792, which office he held for twenty years. He
filled other offices of trust and honor. He died in Gloucester
[5 Feb., [852.

Mr. Phelps first resided in Hebron, N. H. On the 12th of
Feb., 1 85 1, he, with his family, started to cross the plains for
Oregon. In Dec. of same year he located in Linn Co. where
he lived until 1867. He was a member of the Territorial
Legislature in 1852-53-54, and at some other times filled pub-
lic stations. In 1867 he moved from Linn Co. to Yaquiua in
Benton Co.

of Masons, No. 296, 3 Oct., 1815. He died in Cincinnati, 12
April, 1837, and buried in the Episcopal burying ground.
